The read

The ALCS is tied 1-1. Game 3 moves to Progressive Field for a 1:00 PM ET first pitch, the first of three straight days of baseball. A home crowd that roared through an ALDS comeback gets its first look at this series, and I'm riding with Cleveland.

Start on the mound. Gavin Williams pitches on regular rest after striking out a dozen in the Game 5 clincher against the White Sox. He had 24 strikeouts in that series and led the AL with 248 during the regular season. In a game that could swing this series, I want the ace who's rolling.

Across from him, Griffin Jax makes the first playoff start of his career. It's a great story: a year ago, this reliever-turned-starter wasn't sure he'd ever start again. But his last five starts covered only 20.2 innings. That likely means a lot of outs for Bryan Baker, Kevin Kelly and Cole Sulser, with Game 4 coming right behind on Friday. Tampa Bay can't empty its bullpen today without paying for it tomorrow.

Cleveland's late innings are rested. Between a quiet Game 2 and Wednesday's off day, Cade Smith is practically coming off a vacation. Get Smith a lead late and I like Cleveland's chances of holding it.

And there's belief here. These Guardians climbed out of an 0-2 hole against the White Sox and rallied late to steal Game 1 in Tampa Bay. This team plays like it expects the big moment to break its way, especially at home.

The risk is real. The Rays went 98-64 to Cleveland's 85-77, and they had the lowest strikeout rate in the regular season, which is the worst possible matchup for a strikeout pitcher. Williams has walked 13 in his last 26.0 innings, while Jax has walked only 5 over his last five starts. If Tampa Bay grinds out counts and creates the kind of havoc that won Game 2, this flips fast.

Still, at home, with the ace on the mound and a rested bullpen behind him, I'll take the Guardians to go up 2-1.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

STARTER FORM

  • Griffin Jax: 0.00 ERA over his last 3 starts

    0.00

Jax hasn't allowed an earned run over 13 innings across his last 3 starts, with a 0.69 WHIP against 1.18 for the season and 13 strikeouts. Three starts is a short run, and his 3.53 season ERA is the better read on who he is. The zero will break eventually. The strikeouts and the thin traffic on the bases are the parts most likely to carry into this game, so lean on those over the ERA when sizing him up.

BATTER VS ARM

  • Yandy Diaz vs Gavin Williams: .500

    .500

Diaz has six hits in 12 career at-bats off Gavin Williams, so he has squared him up often when they've met. Twelve at-bats is a small sample, a couple of good nights can build a line like that, and it runs against his current form: a .450 OPS over the last 15 days. The history gives him a reason to break out of the slump in Cleveland, and the cold stretch gives a reason to doubt it. If you look at his hit props, weigh the recent slump at least as heavily as the head-to-head line.

PLATOON EDGE

  • Nathaniel Lowe (bats L) draws Griffin Jax (RHP), batting 5th

    .822

Lowe has been a real run producer against right-handers, an .822 OPS over 336 at-bats, while his .297 against lefties comes from just 45 at-bats. With Jax on the mound and Lowe hitting 5th, he gets his strong side. The righty number rests on a big sample and should hold. His edge is front-loaded: the at-bats against Jax matter most, and a late lefty from the bullpen cuts into it.

  • Liam Hicks (bats L) hits 6th against Gavin Williams (RHP)

    .883

Hicks hits right-handers hard, an .883 OPS across 375 at-bats, and falls to .504 in 104 at-bats against lefties. Both samples are big enough to trust, so the split looks real. Williams is a righty, so Hicks gets his good side from the 6th spot. His early trips against the starter are the best window, since a lefty reliever later flips him to his weak side.

HEAT CHECK

  • Brayan Rocchio: 1.068 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.068

Rocchio has been hitting far above his .705 season OPS, getting on base and driving the ball over the last 15 days. That covers only 34 at-bats, where a few extra-base hits can blow up the number. His 15 home runs say the power is real, but the OPS should drift back toward his season level. Against a 0.5 total-bases line he only needs one hit, and his season form is the safer guide for whether he gets it.

  • Jonny DeLuca: .857 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .857

DeLuca's hot run is the most believable kind: 42 at-bats over the last 15 days, a modest step up from his .728 season OPS. A bigger sample and a smaller gap mean less of this is noise. His 11 home runs say the power belongs to him. Against a 0.5 total-bases line, he looks like a hitter playing a bit above his norm, and his season level still clears a one-hit bar reasonably often.

COOLING OFF

  • Yandy Diaz: .450 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .450

Diaz has barely reached base or hit the ball with authority over his last 40 at-bats, well under his .805 full-season OPS, a .355 gap. Forty at-bats is a small window, and a hitter with that kind of season usually drifts back toward it. The slump is more likely to fade than stick. For his props in Cleveland, anchor on the season number, since a cold two weeks can push his lines below what his full year supports.

  • Junior Caminero: .749 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .749

Caminero is running 0.136 below his .885 season OPS over the last 46 at-bats. That is a mild dip for a hitter at that level, and it should fade, so his season number remains the better guide.

RUNNING GAME

  • Green light: Cleveland Guardians run, and Liam Hicks has caught just 16%

    16% CS

Hicks has thrown out 11 of 69 base stealers this season, so nearly everyone who runs on him is safe. That is a full season of throws and should hold tonight. Cleveland runs 1.1 times a game, so singles turn into runners in scoring position more often. That helps Cleveland score without homers, which matters most for their team total and early-inning runs.

BALLPARK

  • Gavin Williams's ERA drops to 2.84 at Progressive Field

    2.84

Williams has been much better at home: a 2.84 ERA over 18 games and 107.2 innings in Cleveland, with hitters batting .201, against a 5.05 ERA in 76.2 road innings. The home sample is large enough to trust, so this split should mostly hold. Tonight he pitches at Progressive Field, which means the home version of Williams is the one to price, and his home numbers are a fair starting point for strikeout props and the run total.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Rays are 5-1 vs Guardians this season

    5-1

Tampa Bay has taken five of six from Cleveland, and the latest meeting was a 1-0 game, about as close as baseball gets. The sheet lists no starters or venues for those games, so nothing explains the edge beyond the results. Six games is a small sample and one-run games swing on a single swing. Tonight is in Cleveland, so price it on the starting pitchers and current form and give the season series little weight.

TEAM RECORD

  • Guardians 6-2 in Gavin Williams's last 8 starts

    6-2

Cleveland has won six of the eight games Williams has started, which says the club has been winning on his days. A team record also carries the lineup and bullpen behind him, and the sheet doesn't show his own pitching lines from those starts. Eight starts is a short stretch, so this record can move fast. Against Tampa Bay, check how he actually pitched in those games before giving Cleveland extra credit for the wins.

REGRESSION

  • Chandler Simpson: .306 AVG vs .261 xBA

    .261

Simpson is getting more hits than the way he strikes the ball would usually earn, and his overall production runs ahead of his contact quality the same way, .305 wOBA against a .263 expected. Over 612 plate appearances this is a full season of evidence, so it is more than a hot week. Some of the gap can stick for a fast player who beats out grounders, though the expected marks suggest his results sit closer to average than they look. Against Cleveland, lean on his contact profile over the batting average when sizing up his hits and on-base props.

  • Tampa Bay Rays are 25-14 in one-run games (.641 win rate)

    25-14

Tampa Bay Rays are 25-14 in one-run games in the 2026 regular season (39 completed games). They are 73-50 in their other 123 completed games.

    MLBTampa Bay Rays· -115

    Griffin Jax
    Pitcher Outs over 11.5

    -115 · CASHED · ACTUAL 12

    Tampa Bay Rays

I'm taking Griffin Jax over 11.5 outs at -115. He needs four full innings, and his September says he gets there.

Look at his four clean starts since he came back. Against the Braves, Athletics and Red Sox, plus his last full turn in August, he recorded exactly fifteen outs every time. He did it on very few pitches: 66, 67 and 74 in September. That's an efficient starter who keeps his pitch count down and finishes five.

The two short outings had reasons. The September 2 start against the Mets was his first one back from elbow discomfort, and it got away from him early. The September 26 start in Philadelphia ended after three scoreless innings because a comebacker hit him in the lower back. A manager's quick hook didn't cut either one short. Kevin Cash says Jax is full go today, and he stayed sharp by throwing two innings in relief in the Yankees clincher.

The schedule helps too. Games 3, 4 and 5 are on consecutive days, and Ian Seymour and Kevin Kelly both worked the first two games of this series. Cash needs length from his starter more today than he will at any other point in the week. Rasmussen and Peralta each went six in Tampa, so he has been willing to let starters work.

Cleveland also gives him a fighting chance. Steven Kwan is hitless in ten career at-bats against him, and this lineup puts the ball in play more than it strikes out, which keeps his pitch count low.

Now the case against. Five of Cleveland's nine starters bat left-handed, and lefties have hurt Jax more than righties this year. José Ramírez has handled him well over 19 career plate appearances. Jax hasn't started in eighteen days, and Cash pulled Nick Martinez in the fourth inning of the ALDS clincher once the game tightened. One rough second trip through the order and Cash will go to the pen. I still like four innings from a pitcher who has been getting fifteen outs for fun.

  • GARY'S PICK
    BRAYAN ROCCHIOH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
    MLBCleveland Guardians· -144

    Brayan Rocchio
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -144 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Cleveland Guardians

I'm on Brayan Rocchio over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -144. A single, a run scored or a runner driven in all cash this.

The matchup favors him. He's a switch-hitter, and against the right-handed Jax he hits left-handed, which has been his far better side all year. Ten of his fifteen home runs came against righties. He finished September as one of the hotter bats at the bottom of this order, with five home runs that month. On the other side, Jax has been more hittable by left-handed batters than by righties this season.

The lineup around him matters too. Rocchio bats ninth, and right behind him come Kwan, Ramírez and DeLauter. If he reaches base any way at all, those three give him a real chance to score. This line was priced shorter at -150 to -180 in his earlier October games, so today's price is a small discount on a player back in his home park.

The case against is the reason the price is fair. He's hitless across his last three games and through both games of this series, and he struck out six times in the last week. From the ninth spot he gets the fewest trips to the plate of anyone in the lineup. His two career plate appearances against Jax were both outs, though two trips tells us very little. Late in the game he'd see a Rays bullpen that pitched to a low ERA all season. If Rocchio goes down quietly three times, the bet is lost. I'm betting the slump ends against a righty in his own park, with three tough hitters waiting behind him to bring him home.
