The read

Down 3-0, the Dodgers take the field at Dodger Stadium tonight one loss from the end of their bid to become the first National League team to win three consecutive World Series. The Brewers, swept by this same club in this same round a year ago, are one win from their first World Series in 44 years, and their fans are filling American Family Field for a watch party. I'm still taking the team that has to win.

Only one dugout has to manage like there's no tomorrow. Milwaukee gets another shot tomorrow, so Pat Murphy has every reason to keep Game 5 in mind. Dave Roberts doesn't. Edwin Díaz is fully rested, Tanner Scott sat out last night, and every leverage arm Los Angeles has is available.

The Brewers' plan looks thin. Shane Drohan opens what the beat writers call a bullpen game, and it's a postseason debut. Drohan has allowed 15 earned runs in 20.1 innings with 10 walks over the last five starts. Trevor Megill and Abner Uribe, Milwaukee's two most-used late-inning arms, both pitched last night, and so did DL Hall. Nobody has confirmed whether any of them can go. Aaron Ashby, Antonio Senzatela, Chad Patrick and Kyle Harrison are fresh, but if this one is close late, the Crew may not have its best relievers to close it out.

Tyler Glasnow can carry one game. The walks are a real worry: 16 in 27 innings over the last five starts, and 5 in the NLDS start at Atlanta. But that same outing allowed just 1 hit across 4.2 innings. Los Angeles needs a strong start before handing the ball to a rested bullpen, and Glasnow has shown it's possible.

Shohei Ohtani is back at leadoff. Scoring has been the Dodgers' problem all series, and Roberts answered by putting the club's best hitter at the top against a left-hander who has struggled.

What could burn me: Milwaukee has won tight games all October, with Chourio and Contreras delivering big moments, and the Brewers came back from three deficits in Game 2. If the Dodgers' bats stay quiet, a rested bullpen won't matter, and an early lead built on Glasnow walks would turn the building fast.

Still, the team that needs it tonight has the fresher bullpen at the top. The Dodgers live to see Game 5.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAT CHECK

  • Will Smith: 1.182 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.182

Smith has been one of the hottest bats around, well above his .781 season OPS, a 0.401 swing. That run covers just 31 at-bats, so a couple of big games carry most of it. His 10 home runs say the pop fits who he is, and a jump this large usually settles. His total-bases line sits at 0.5, so the bet comes down to a single hit, and his season baseline already clears that bar often.

  • Mookie Betts: 1.046 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.046

Betts is running 0.266 above his .780 season OPS, and he has done it over 46 at-bats, a bigger sample than most hot streaks. His 23 home runs back up the power. Some cooling toward his season form is the likely path, though this stretch has more behind it than one good weekend. Against Milwaukee his total-bases line is 1.5, which asks for a double or a homer, and that fits how he has been swinging.

COOLING OFF

  • Freddie Freeman: .489 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .489

Freeman has made weak contact and rarely reached base over his last 46 at-bats, a .303 drop from his .792 season OPS. Forty-six at-bats is a short window, and a hitter with his full-season baseline tends to climb back toward it. Expect the slump to ease more than continue. Against Milwaukee, weigh the season mark over the cold stretch when looking at his hit and total-base props.

  • Garrett Mitchell: .560 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .560

Mitchell is 0.211 below his .771 season OPS over his last 36 at-bats. That is about a week and a half of games, and a few hard-hit outs can sink a number that fast. Expect him to move back toward his season level over a longer run. For this game in Los Angeles, the slump alone is a thin reason to fade him.

BULLPEN

  • Milwaukee Brewers pen: 13.2 relief IP across 3 games

    13.2 IP

Abner Uribe worked all 3 games (48 pitches); Trevor Megill worked 2 games (37 pitches; 2.63 season ERA over 61.2 IP). The pen allowed 2 ER in that 13.2-IP span (Oct 11–Oct 14).

BALLPARK

  • At Dodger Stadium, Tyler Glasnow pitches to a 4.25 ERA

    4.25

Glasnow's home ERA comes from only 6 games and 36.0 innings, and hitters are batting just .190 off him there. A low average beside a higher ERA points to a few bad innings doing the damage. His 2.84 ERA elsewhere covers 38.0 innings, so neither side of the split is large and both can move quickly. Against Milwaukee, judge him on how he is throwing now and give the ballpark number little weight.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Brewers are 4-3 vs Dodgers this season

    4-3

Milwaukee leads the season series by a single game over seven meetings, which is close to even. The sheet doesn't list who pitched those games or where, so the record can't show whether any edge carries over. The last meeting was a 6-2 Brewers win, one game. Tonight's starters and the Dodger Stadium setting will tell you more than the series split.

    K'S over 5.5

    -156 · CASHED · ACTUAL 6

    Los Angeles Dodgers

I'm on Tyler Glasnow over 5.5 strikeouts at -156.

The price is set at six, and his recent run has been well above that. He struck out 11 Padres on Sept 24, 10 Giants on Sept 18, 8 Nationals and 7 Marlins before that. Even in the shaky Oct 7 outing at Atlanta, when he walked five and lasted only 4.2 innings, he still got five strikeouts. His knuckle curve is his best putaway pitch, and when it's working he collects strikeouts in bunches.

The Brewers lineup gives him plenty of swing and miss to work with. Garrett Mitchell has 179 strikeouts this season, Brice Turang 177, Jake Bauers 168 and Christian Yelich 139. Those are four of the six left-handed bats Glasnow sees tonight. Mitchell struck out three times in Game 2 and twice in Game 3. Bauers has six strikeouts in his last seven days. Yelich is 1 for 14 with seven strikeouts against Glasnow in his career. That is a small sample, but it points the same way. This group struck out nine times against Blake Snell over six innings last night and seven times against Tarik Skubal in five innings in Game 1. Ryan Additon is behind the plate, and his zone has run a little above league average for strikeouts this year.

The risk is length. Milwaukee's identity this series is the long at-bat. Bauers saw 12 pitches from Yamamoto and 11 from Snell, and if the Brewers drag Glasnow into deep counts while he's walking people the way he did in Atlanta, his pitch count can run out before he reaches six. His four-seamer also missed fewer bats in that last start. The bottom of the order is tougher to strike out: Sal Frelick has only 40 strikeouts all year, and Cooper Pratt and William Contreras put the ball in play. Even so, six strikeouts is a modest number for a pitcher who has reached seven or more in five of his seven starts since returning in late August, and the hitters at the top and middle of this order give him the chances to get there.

    TYLER GLASNOWPITCHER OUTS OVER 14.5
    MLBLos Angeles Dodgers· -144

    Tyler Glasnow
    Pitcher Outs over 14.5

    -144 · LOST · ACTUAL 13

    Los Angeles Dodgers

I'm taking Tyler Glasnow over 14.5 outs at -144. He needs to finish the fifth inning to cash this.

He has gone deeper than that most of the time since returning in late August. He recorded 21 outs at Detroit, 18 against Washington, 18 against San Francisco and 19 against San Diego, and he averages close to 17 outs per start this season. Dave Roberts called him fresh after Game 3. He last pitched Oct 7, so he comes in with a full week of rest.

The Dodgers bullpen also argues for keeping him in. Roberts has already said Skubal and Yamamoto are not available in relief. The middle of the pen has been hit in this series: Kris Bubic, Brock Stewart and Edgardo Henriquez all gave up runs in Game 2, and Roki Sasaki and Justin Wrobleski were scored on in Game 3. Roberts wants to get to Evan Phillips, Alex Vesia, Tanner Scott and Edwin Díaz with a lead. Glasnow covering five clean innings is how he gets there, so I expect a starter who's pitching well to stay in.

The case against me is strong. His last start was 4.2 innings with five walks on 78 pitches, the exact outcome that loses this bet. He also lasted only four innings at Miami on Sept 12. Milwaukee works counts as well as anyone, and Bauers' long at-bats this week have pushed two Dodgers starters out early. In an elimination game, one bad inning could get him pulled in the fourth. Snell, though, finished six innings last night and Skubal finished five in Game 1, and Roberts let both work before going to the pen. If Glasnow keeps his walks under control, he has gotten past this number regularly.
