The read
Dodger Stadium gets its first look at this NLCS tonight, and the two-time reigning champs come in down 0-2 for the first time since the 2023 NLDS sweep by Arizona. If they lose this one, they're one game from going home.
Being desperate and at home is the best thing LA has going for it. The off-day also came at the right time. The Dodgers used seven of their nine relievers in Game 2 after Yamamoto's short start, and now Tanner Scott, Edwin Díaz and Evan Phillips are all rested. Díaz hasn't pitched in the last three days. In a must-win game, the Dodgers can go to the bullpen as early as they need to.
Blake Snell has been sharp lately, allowing 3 earned runs in 20.1 innings over the last five starts. The Dodgers "need that version of Snell now more than ever," and I think they get it.
Milwaukee is managing a series, not just a game. The Brewers haven't named a Game 4 starter, Pat Murphy has talked about lining up Dustin May for it, and the beat writers note that "length from Gasser would help set things up." A team up 2-0 and planning for three days at Dodger Stadium plays this game differently than a team fighting to stay alive.
The risk is real, though. Snell walked 9 in those last five starts and needed 90 pitches to get through 3.2 innings against Atlanta, walking 5. The Brewers have won by one run all October (3-2, 4-3, 2-1), and free baserunners are how they win those games. Robert Gasser has been just as good, allowing 4 earned runs in 26.2 innings over the last five starts. The Dodgers lineup is also weaker tonight, with Max Muncy on the bench, Miguel Rojas at third and Will Smith in a slump.
This Milwaukee team came back from three deficits in Game 2 and is not the team that got swept a year ago. Tonight, though, I'm backing the champs at home with a rested bullpen and no reason to hold anything back. Dodgers in a close one.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
STARTER FORM
Robert Gasser: 1.06 ERA over his last 3 starts
1.06Gasser has allowed 2 earned runs in 17 innings over his last three starts with 14 strikeouts, so he is pitching deep and keeping runs off the board. Three starts is a short stretch, and his 3.87 season ERA is the better read on who he is. Expect some pull back toward that number, especially facing the Dodgers in their park.
HEAT CHECK
Will Smith: 1.182 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.182Smith is one of the hottest Dodgers bats right now, running 0.401 above his .781 season mark. That is only 31 at-bats, so a couple of loud swings can carry a number like this, and it should settle toward his season level. His 10 home runs show real pop, so his 1.5 total-bases line against Milwaukee comes down to whether one extra-base hit shows up.
Mookie Betts: 1.046 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.046Betts is swinging well above his .780 season baseline. The run covers 46 at-bats, bigger than most hot streaks, so there is more behind it than one good weekend. His 23 home runs back the power, though some cooling toward season form is the likely path. His 1.5 total-bases line against Milwaukee needs one double or a homer, which fits how he has been hitting.
COOLING OFF
Freddie Freeman: .489 OPS in Last 15 Days
.489Freeman has been making weak contact and rarely reaching base, sitting 0.303 below his .792 season mark. That slump covers 46 at-bats, a small window, and hitters with a full-season baseline that solid tend to drift back toward it. Against Milwaukee, his season number is the better guide when you look at his hit or total-base props.
Garrett Mitchell: .560 OPS in Last 15 Days
.560Mitchell has been cold, well under his .771 season mark. The slump covers 36 at-bats, about a week and a half of games, where a few hard-hit outs can sink the number fast. He should move back toward his season level over a longer run. In Los Angeles tonight, the slump alone is a thin reason to fade him.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Brewers are 4-3 vs Dodgers this season
4-3The season series is close to even, with Milwaukee one game up across seven meetings. The sheet doesn't say who pitched those games or where they were played, so the split can't tell you what carries over. The last meeting was a 6-2 Brewers win, one game. Tonight's starters and the Dodger Stadium setting say more than the series record does.
TEAM RECORD
Brewers 6-2 in Robert Gasser's last 8 starts
6-2Milwaukee has won his last three starts in a row, so the run is current. Eight games is a short stretch, and a team record counts the lineup and bullpen as much as Gasser himself. Tonight is a road start at Dodger Stadium, a harder setting than most of those wins likely came in. The streak tells you the club plays well behind him, and the price on this matchup still has to stand on its own.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKBLAKE SNELLPITCHER EARNED RUNS UNDER 1.5
The line is Blake Snell under 1.5 earned runs at -175. Zero or one earned run cashes it. Two beats me.
Since Snell came back in August, he has not given up more than one earned run in any start, regular season or postseason. That covers nine starts. He has not allowed a home run all year in 192 batters faced, and right-handed hitters have a .503 OPS against him. That matters because Milwaukee puts five righties in this lineup. Two of them, Jackson Chourio and Andrew Vaughn, have hit lefties hard this season. Even so, the Brewers as a team have a .706 OPS against left-handed pitching, well below what they do against righties.
The park helps too. Dodger Stadium at night, with the marine layer, is a hard place to leave the yard. Milwaukee's October offense has run on singles, walks and bunts, and Snell can absorb that kind of pressure when his curveball is missing bats.
His exposure is also capped tonight. This is a must-win home game, and Roberts has Díaz, Scott, Phillips and Vesia all rested. He has no reason to let Snell sit through a crooked number on a third trip through the order.
The case against is the walks. In his last start Snell walked five Braves in 3.2 innings, and Roberts said he was pitching too fine. The Brewers are the most patient lineup he will have faced, runners have stolen freely on him this season, and Will Smith has not controlled the running game. Walks and steals can produce two earned runs without a single hard-hit ball. Any runner he leaves on base who scores after he exits also goes on his line. Even so, that Atlanta start with five walks still ended with only one earned run, and his August and September work says he keeps the damage small when he gets in trouble.
- GARY'S PICKJAKE BAUERSH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
The line is Jake Bauers over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -150. One single, one run scored or one run driven in gets it home.
The handedness works for Bauers tonight. He has been better against left-handed pitching this year, with a .901 OPS and eight homers in 160 plate appearances against lefties. He also bats fifth, right behind Turang, Contreras and Vaughn. Contreras is the hottest bat in this series and Vaughn has punished lefties all season, so Bauers should come up with runners on base more than once. We saw what he does in those spots when he drove in a run off Wrobleski in Game 2.
He has a hit in each of his last three games. He also walks constantly, and a walk can still pay off if he comes around to score. If Snell's pitch count climbs early, Bauers likely gets a middle-innings look at the Dodgers bullpen with traffic on the bases, and that is where his patience plays best.
The case against is real. Snell has held left-handed hitters to a .583 OPS, though that is only 43 at-bats. Bauers is 0 for 3 with two strikeouts against him, an even smaller sample. Bauers is also swinging through a lot of pitches right now, with eight strikeouts in 12 at-bats over the last week. A walk only counts here if he scores, and Milwaukee has played low-scoring games for most of October. At -150 I am paying for a run-producing spot in the order and a platoon split that favors him against a lefty.
