The read
Winner-take-all at Progressive Field. Sean Burke and Gavin Williams meet with a trip to Tampa Bay on the line, in a series where the road team has won all four games. I'm taking the White Sox at plus money because Burke is the starter I trust most against this particular opponent. He has a 1.19 ERA against the Guardians this season, with 27 strikeouts and four walks in 22 2/3 innings. In his last two outings in Cleveland he allowed one earned run over 10 1/3 innings. Look at how Cleveland broke out in Chicago: White Sox pitchers walked 10 in Game 3 and seven more in Game 4. In Games 1 and 2, against Chicago's longest-working arms, Cleveland scored three runs total and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Burke has walked two batters in 14.2 innings over his last three outings, which takes away the walks that fed Cleveland's two big games. Ramírez is hot, but he's 0-for-8 in his career against Burke and has a .625 OPS against right-handers this year.
Williams has the bigger arm, but he comes in with more questions. He threw 18 high-leverage pitches Thursday in his first pro relief appearance. He has also walked 14 batters in 26.1 innings over his last five starts. This same matchup has happened twice in the last four weeks, with Williams starting and Burke pitching the bulk innings, and Chicago won both. On Sep 14 they won 7-3, and Williams needed 113 pitches to get through five innings, with three walks and two hit batters. In Game 2 they won 4-3. Vargas is 6-for-14 against Williams and has reached base 12 times in this series. If Chicago makes Williams work, the game gets to a Cleveland bullpen with problems. Cade Smith threw 50 pitches across Games 3 and 4, spent Friday getting treatment, and is reportedly limited to one inning tonight. Gaddis has allowed left-handed hitters a .301/.373/.496 line, and he'd be facing a lineup with six lefties.
The risk is real. Chicago is striking out 12.50 times a game this postseason against the AL strikeout leader. Its bullpen behind Burke is also the thinner one: Grant Taylor is coming off an outing where he got nobody out, and Fedde may be unavailable after throwing 61 pitches. That's why this is a bet on the price, not a lock. These clubs are 9-8 over 17 meetings, yet the +120 line treats Chicago as a clear underdog. Burke gives the Sox their best shot at innings from their starter. Newcomb and Schultz have had two days off to cover after him, and Grichuk is on the bench to hit against Cleveland's left-handed relievers. I'll take the plus money.

HEAT CHECK
Brenton Doyle: 1.029 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.029Doyle has a 1.029 OPS over the last 15 days, a hot stretch built on 35 at-bats against a .637 season mark. That is a big swing over a short run, and his season number says he is a below-average bat, so expect this to cool. Prices that lean on the hot streak are the ones to be wary of.
Brayan Rocchio: 1.068 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.068Rocchio has a 1.068 OPS over his last 34 at-bats, well above his .705 season mark, and he has 15 home runs on the year. Thirty-four at-bats is a short burst, so the season line is closer to who he is. His total-bases line tonight sits at 0.5, which only needs one hit, so the question is whether he reaches base at a normal rate at home, which is about his season form more than the streak.
COOLING OFF
Colson Montgomery: .265 OPS in Last 15 Days
.265Montgomery has a .265 OPS over his last 39 at-bats, which means almost no hits and no power, against a .685 mark for the season. Thirty-nine at-bats is a small sample, and the season number is the better guide, so some bounce back is the likelier direction. On his props, lean on the .685 hitter and expect modest output rather than pricing in the slump as permanent.
BULLPEN
Chicago White Sox pen: 24 relief IP across 3 games
24 IP5.1 of those innings came from Sean Burke on Oct 5 (83 pitches). Tyler Davis worked 2 games (48 pitches); Grant Taylor worked 2 games (25 pitches; 2.25 season ERA over 84 IP). The pen allowed 19 ER in that 24-IP span (Oct 5–Oct 8). No team game on Oct 9.
Cleveland Guardians pen: 19 relief IP across 3 games
19 IPCade Smith worked all 3 games (55 pitches); Hunter Gaddis worked all 3 games (45 pitches; 2.98 season ERA over 60.1 IP). The pen allowed 7 ER in that 19-IP span (Oct 5–Oct 8). No team game on Oct 9.
TEAM RECORD
White Sox 7-1 in Sean Burke's last 8 starts
7-1Chicago has won seven of Burke's last eight turns, including his last three in a row, so the team has played well behind him lately. The sheet gives no ERA or run support behind that record, and eight starts is a short window where a couple of close games swing it. Use it as a sign Burke's starts have been competitive, then check how he matches up with a Cleveland lineup at home before leaning on it.
Guardians 6-2 in Gavin Williams's last 8 starts
6-2Cleveland is 6-2 in Williams's last eight starts, and his home numbers help explain it: the team tends to win when he pitches. Eight starts is a small window, and team record also folds in offense and bullpen. With both starters carrying strong recent team records, this record alone does not separate the two sides tonight.

2- GARY'S PICKGAVIN WILLIAMSK'S OVER 6.5
Gavin Williams over 6.5 strikeouts at -135. Five days ago this number sat at 7.5, and he cleared it with 11 strikeouts in five innings against this same White Sox lineup. Ten of those came against left-handed hitters. Chicago starts six lefties again tonight, and that side of the plate has been where Williams does his best work all season.
The individual matchups point the same way. Colson Montgomery is 0 for 9 with eight strikeouts against him in 11 career plate appearances, and he comes in without a hit in his last 22 at-bats. Kyle Teel is 0 for 9 with six strikeouts against Williams. Murakami has struck out three times in six career trips against him. This White Sox lineup struck out 19 times in Game 3, so the swing and miss is real and current. Williams also gets the home mound, where he posted a 2.84 ERA over 18 starts this year against 5.05 on the road. He is on normal rest, and Thursday's 18 pitches of relief replaced his usual bullpen session.
The risk is length. Vogt gave no pitch count and said the game will decide when Williams comes out, and in an elimination game that hook can come fast. He walked eight in his last three starts, and on Sep 25 in Kansas City he lasted only 3.1 innings with four strikeouts. Vargas is 6 for 14 with two walks against him and drew two more walks in Game 2, which is part of why Williams needed 98 pitches to get through five innings. If he labors early he could exit before he reaches seven. Vic Carapazza behind the plate also runs a little tighter on strikeouts than the league. Even so, a pitcher who struck out 248 hitters this year, facing a lefty-heavy lineup he just carved up, is a good bet to get there. I'm on the over.
- GARY'S PICKSEAN BURKEK'S OVER 3.5
Sean Burke over 3.5 strikeouts at -138. Four strikeouts is a modest number for a pitcher who struck out 185 in 172.1 innings this season and has gone eight, seven and five in his last three starts. He already handled this lineup in Game 2: six strikeouts over 5.1 innings of bulk relief on 83 pitches. In that game his riding mid-90s fastball was beating Cleveland hitters above their barrels. Ramírez struck out twice, Adell struck out twice, and Lowe went down as well.
The career looks back that up. Bazzana has four strikeouts in nine plate appearances against Burke, Ramírez has three in 10, and Adell has three in seven. Burke is fully rested and makes a traditional start with no opener in front of him. That gives him a clean first trip through the order. Chicago's bullpen has been hit hard in the last two games, which gives Venable reason to let his best starter work deeper.
The strongest case against this is the opponent. Cleveland is one of the harder lineups to strike out. Kwan has one strikeout in 16 career plate appearances against Burke, and Rocchio has struck out three times in 14. Angel Martínez, who struck out seven times in this series, is on the bench, and Petey Halpin puts the ball in play more often. Burke's floor is also ugly. The Pirates knocked him out after 1.1 innings with two strikeouts, he walked eight Rangers in three innings in August, and he carries a 5.00 ERA in first innings this year. Venable has also said every arm is available. If the first inning gets away from Burke, he may not stay out there long enough to reach four. I'm still taking the over at this line, because the stuff he showed against this group five days ago only needs a short outing to get there.
