The read
October baseball opens at Progressive Field with a rookie lefty on each mound, but they have very different jobs: one is built to go deep, the other to hand the ball off early. That difference is the handicap for me. Parker Messick has a 2.56 ERA over 186.1 innings, and the opponent wOBA of .274 sits right on a .275 xwOBA, so the run prevention is real, not luck. Messick is also tougher on right-handed hitters, allowing a .599 OPS across 500 AB, and Chicago sends six right-handed bats at a lefty. Hagen Smith's longest outing this season is 3.0 innings on 38 pitches, and Will Venable wants Smith and Grant Taylor available in each of the first three games. That leaves Chicago's bullpen to get roughly 18 to 21 outs today, while Cleveland's needs about 9 to 12.
That is where Cleveland wins it. Behind Messick is a back end coming off six or more full days of rest, led by Cade Smith: 13 innings, zero earned runs and 21 strikeouts over the last 30 days, with an off day tomorrow that allows a longer outing. Chicago's middle relief is thinner. Over the last 30 days Sean Newcomb has an 11.00 ERA and Bryan Hudson a 6.43, and some of today's innings will likely fall outside the top tier. Once Chicago goes to its right-handed relievers, Cleveland's switch-hitters bat from the left side, and Cleveland has an .808 OPS against right-handed starters over its last 30 games compared with .672 against lefties. Smith has also walked six Cleveland hitters in 5⅔ innings this season. The closest template is Sep 16 in this park: Messick went six innings with no walks and eight strikeouts, Smith walked two and took the loss, and Cleveland won 6-3.
The case against is real. Jordan Hicks hasn't allowed an earned run in 9.2 innings over the last 30 days. Chicago took the season series 7-6. A total of 7 points to a tight game that one swing from Munetaka Murakami or Miguel Vargas could decide. Cleveland's hitters also haven't faced live pitching since Sep 27. I'm laying -152 anyway, because Chicago's best relievers can't cover the whole game, and the plan to keep Smith and Taylor fresh for Games 2 and 3 limits how hard Chicago can push them today. In a rivalry this close, I'll back the team with the deeper starter and the fully rested closer.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
PLATOON EDGE
Randal Grichuk (bats R) gets a LHP from the 2nd spot
1.025Grichuk has a 1.025 OPS in 165 at-bats against lefties and a .636 in 100 at-bats against righties, so he turns into a much better hitter with a lefty on the mound. The lefty split is the larger of the two samples, which makes it more trustworthy. Batting second against Parker Messick gets him up in the first inning and more trips overall. His props and early scoring looks are where this split applies.
Jo Adell (bats R) hits 4th against Hagen Smith (LHP)
.971Adell has a .971 OPS in 172 at-bats against lefties and a .591 in 431 at-bats against righties. Since most of his at-bats come against right-handers, his overall line hides how dangerous he is with a lefty on the mound. Hitting cleanup against Hagen Smith puts him up with runners on more often. On nights a lefty starts, check his split against that hand before his season numbers.
HEAT CHECK
Brenton Doyle: 1.029 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.029Doyle has a 1.029 OPS over the last 15 days, a big jump from the .637 that reflects his full season. That run covers only 35 at-bats, so a few well-placed hits can puff it up fast, and he should drift back toward his season level. His total-bases line is 0.5, so the over needs one hit, and the hot stretch is a thin sample to lean on.
Brayan Rocchio: 1.068 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.068Rocchio has a 1.068 OPS over the last 15 days against a .705 season mark. The sample is 34 at-bats, so a couple of extra-base hits move it a lot. His 15 home runs give the surge some real backing, though the season line says this pace runs above his norm. Against a 0.5 total-bases line one single cashes it, so his ability to put the ball in play matters more than the hot run.
Chase Meidroth: 1.066 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.066Meidroth has a 1.066 OPS over the last 15 days in 41 at-bats, up from a solid .765 season mark. His 16 home runs back the power, so this looks like a good hitter running hot. Some cooling is likely. His 1.5 total-bases line in Cleveland needs a double or two singles, and recent form is the case for clearing it.
COOLING OFF
Colson Montgomery: .265 OPS in Last 15 Days
.265Colson Montgomery has a .265 OPS over the last 15 days in 39 at-bats, against a .685 season mark. That is a short sample, and his baseline was modest to start, so a rebound has a low ceiling. Against Cleveland, expect some recovery toward .685, which is still an average-at-best bat.
Tristan Peters: .307 OPS in Last 15 Days
.307Tristan Peters has a .307 OPS over the last 15 days, from only 28 at-bats, against a .774 season mark. A handful of hits would move that number a lot, so it should climb back. Against Cleveland, give the season mark most of the weight.

2- GARY'S PICKMUNETAKA MURAKAMIH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
I'm taking Murakami over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -155. He needs one hit, one run or one RBI, and today his spot in the lineup gives him several ways to get there.
He bats cleanup behind Chase Meidroth, Randal Grichuk and Miguel Vargas. All three hit lefties hard: Meidroth has a 1.023 OPS against them, Grichuk 1.025 and Vargas .927. With a left-hander starting for Cleveland, Murakami should come up with runners on base more than once, so even a sacrifice fly or a ground ball to the right side can cash this. The walks help too. He drew 92 this year, and a walk in front of Tommy Pham, Brenton Doyle and a hot Kyle Teel gives him a real chance to score without swinging the bat.
Then there is the back half of the game. Parker Messick has worked five or six innings in most of his starts this year. After he leaves, Cleveland usually goes to right-handers like Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, Matt Festa and Shawn Armstrong. Murakami has an .867 OPS and 28 home runs against right-handed pitching, which is where his damage comes from. He has also taken Messick deep once in four career at-bats. And Messick has given up more to left-handed hitters this year (.688 OPS) than to righties (.599).
The case against is real. Murakami is hitting .180 against lefties with 196 strikeouts on the year, and he hit .167 in September. He went hitless against Cleveland in all three games at Progressive Field in mid-September, and he went 0 for 5 with three strikeouts in the Wild Card clincher. Cleveland can also bring in Erik Sabrowski or Tim Herrin to face him late. I'll pay the price anyway. He'll get four or five plate appearances in the middle of the order with the table set in front of him, and this line pays on a single, a run or one RBI.
- GARY'S PICKKYLE TEELH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
I'm taking Kyle Teel over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -140. This is mainly a bet on form. He has been one of the hottest bats in Chicago's lineup: 6 for 16 over the last week, with an RBI single in the first inning of the clincher in Houston and a two-hit game in that clincher. He also had two hits against a lefty, José Quintana, in the final week of the regular season, so the left-on-left matchup hasn't shut him down recently.
The matchup has two parts. Against Messick, the starter, the edge is small: Messick has been more hittable by left-handed batters (.688 OPS) than by righties (.599). The better part comes late. Once Messick leaves, Cleveland's high-leverage relievers are mostly right-handed, and Teel has a .744 OPS with all five of his home runs against right-handed pitching. He also takes walks, and Braden Montgomery hits behind him after going 9 for 21 this week. If Teel reaches, he has a real chance to score.
The contrary evidence is clear. Teel has a .575 OPS against lefties, although that comes from only 39 plate appearances. He is 0 for 3 with two strikeouts against Messick in his career, including a hitless game with a walk on Sep 16. Batting seventh costs him plate appearances compared with the top of the order, and he strikes out often. I'm still backing a catcher who is hot and plays the whole game, and he gets a run of right-handed relievers late in a game I expect to stay close.
