The read

Winner take all at Truist Park, with the loser's season ending tonight. Aaron Nola takes the ball for Philadelphia against an Atlanta bullpen game that opens with lefty Ray Kerr and hands off to Grant Holmes. My pick comes down to which team has more left for the back half of the game, and Philadelphia does. Zack Wheeler is lined up behind Nola on three days' rest after a 1.67 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 37.2 innings over the last six starts. Jhoan Duran is fresh after being held out of Game 2. Atlanta's three trusted late arms, Raisel Iglesias, Didier Fuentes and Dylan Lee, all pitched on Sep 29 and Sep 30, and in the regular season none of them pitched a third straight day (0 of 28 combined). Game 2 already showed the strain: Lee gave up back-to-back homers to Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, and Alec Bohm beat Fuentes in the 10th.

The early innings support it too. On regular rest since mid-August, Nola has run about a 2.23 ERA over seven starts, including 13.1 innings and 3 earned runs against this lineup in September. Kerr hasn't gone past 35 pitches since returning, so Holmes carries the bulk, and Holmes threw only 29 strikes in 54 pitches in the one bulk-relief try. Harper has a .997 OPS against right-handers and .657 against lefties. Atlanta's opener gets Harper once, and every look after that comes against right-handed pitching.

The case against is real. Austin Riley has hit .365 with 6 homers in 63 at-bats against Nola, and Atlanta's core does its damage on fastballs and sinkers, Nola's weakest pitches. Philadelphia's defense has soft spots, with Harper in right and Edmundo Sosa at third on a leg aggravated yesterday. Iglesias threw only 16 pitches across the two games and could go again in an elimination game. Still, Atlanta's edge is early, against Nola. Once Wheeler takes over, the history flips: Michael Harris II has a .415 OPS against Wheeler in 26 at-bats. At a coin-flip price, I want the team with better arms for innings six through nine. The research

HEAT CHECK

  • Mauricio Dubon: .994 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .994

Dubon has been squaring the ball up, a .994 OPS over 42 at-bats in the last 15 days against .719 for the season. Twelve home runs this year show the power comes in bursts, and 42 at-bats is too few to call this a new level, so expect a pullback toward .719. His total-bases line in PHI @ ATL is 1.5, which takes a double or two hits, a harder ask than a hot streak alone suggests.

  • Bryson Stott: .941 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .941

Stott has a .941 OPS over 41 at-bats in the last 15 days, 0.205 above his .736 season mark. At 41 at-bats, a couple of extra-base hits can swing that a long way, and 10 home runs on the year point to modest pop. The number should settle back toward .736. Tonight at Atlanta his 1.5 total-bases line needs a double or two singles, so the hot stretch earns a look at the price and no more than that.

COOLING OFF

  • J.T. Realmuto: .197 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .197

Realmuto has barely reached base or hit for any power over the last 15 days, a .197 OPS that sits 0.417 below his .614 season mark. That stretch is 37 at-bats, small enough that a few dead outs drag the number to the floor. He should drift back toward .614, which is already a modest level. In PHI @ ATL, rate him off the season number and don't treat the slump as his new level.

  • Bryce Harper: .609 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .609

Harper's .609 OPS over the last 15 days is a dip from his .865 season level, a drop of 0.256 across 48 at-bats. Forty-eight at-bats is a short window for a hitter whose full season sits well above average. Expect him to climb back toward .865. When you size up the Phillies lineup in Atlanta, weight Harper by his season form, and a market that marks him down for this stretch may be overreacting.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Braves are 9-4 vs Phillies this season

    9-4

Atlanta has won nine of the 13 meetings, a real sample. Philadelphia took the last one 9-4, so the edge does not hold every night. The record shows who has won without saying which starters pitched or where, which limits how much it explains. With the game in Atlanta, give the Braves a mild lean in how you frame this spot, then check tonight's starters before leaning on the head-to-head.

    Edmundo Sosa
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -130 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Philadelphia Phillies

Edmundo Sosa over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -130. He left Game 2 with a right leg issue, and he is still in the lineup tonight at third base, batting seventh in an elimination game. Mattingly would not write his name in if the leg were a real problem. One hit, one run or one RBI cashes this.

Sosa has a hit in both games of this series, one off Chris Sale and one off Raisel Iglesias. His contact this season has been better than his results, with his expected average and expected slugging both above what he has actually hit. His real damage comes against left-handed pitching, where he carries an .835 OPS over 138 plate appearances. Atlanta's plan starts with Ray Kerr, a lefty, and Dylan Dodd is a fresh lefty in that pen. Behind Kerr comes Grant Holmes, who walked 62 hitters this season and walked three in four innings his last time out in bulk relief. Bryson Stott, the hottest bat in this lineup over the last week, hits two spots ahead of him. Runners on base in front of Sosa give him RBI chances to go with the hit chances.

The case against is clear. Kerr is built to handle Schwarber and Harper at the top of the order and hasn't gone past 35 pitches since his return, so the seventh hitter may never see him. Most of Sosa's night likely comes against Holmes and right-handed relief, and against righties he has a .564 OPS across 112 plate appearances. The leg injury is new, which raises the chance he gets lifted late, as he was in both games of this series. At -130 I'll take a hitter whose contact has outrun his numbers and who should get three trips with three ways to cash.

  • GARY'S PICK
BRYAN DE LA CRUZH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
    MLBPhiladelphia Phillies· -155

    Bryan De La Cruz
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -155 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Philadelphia Phillies

Bryan De La Cruz over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -155. He starts in left field batting sixth, taking the platoon start over Brandon Marsh because Atlanta is opening with a lefty. My case rests on who he faces after Ray Kerr. Kerr is there for Schwarber and Harper and hasn't gone past 35 pitches since his return, so most of De La Cruz's trips should come against Grant Holmes and right-handed relief. De La Cruz has an .891 OPS against right-handers this season, though that comes from only 45 plate appearances. He saw Holmes in Atlanta on Sep 13 and singled, figuring in two of the scoring columns that day.

He has also gotten into the box score in both games of this series without much contact. In Game 1 he was hit by a pitch from Sale and scored, and in Game 2 he singled off Fuentes in the 10th. Holmes puts runners on, with three walks in four innings his last time out. Stott hits right in front of him, so De La Cruz should get RBI chances as well as chances to reach and score.

The case against starts with the price and the sample. At -155 I am paying a lot for a hitter with 86 plate appearances this season, and his expected stats sit well under the average and slugging he has posted. His last two weeks at the plate have been quiet. The role is the other risk. He is starting because a lefty opened, Marsh is on the bench, and Mattingly already swapped the two in Game 2. If he loses his third trip to a pinch hitter, this has to cash in two. I'm taking it, with less conviction than the Sosa card.
