The read

Overcast and 67 degrees at Nationals Park with a 16 mph wind howling in from left field — a day game after a night game — and the books can't split these two, both sides sitting right at -108.

I'm on the home Nationals, and the thing that carries this pick is the two-sided platoon squeeze. Connelly Early is a left-hander whose reverse platoon holds left-handed hitters to a .194 average and .589 OPS, and the Mets roll out a lefty-heavy order — Juan Soto, Carson Benge, Brett Baty, A.J. Ewing, plus switch-hitters. That puts Soto, New York's one .900-plus OPS bat, on the side of the plate he's worse from, against a lefty built to smother that side. On the other side of the ball, right-hander Jonah Tong is platoon-neutral, so Washington's best left-handed thumpers, James Wood (.942 OPS vs RHP) and CJ Abrams (.898 vs RHP), get the favorable side of the matchup. Washington also brings the better offense — 5.1 runs per game against the Mets' 4.3 — and has converted better with runners in scoring position lately (.288 over the last 10 versus the Mets' .239, with New York stranding 77 runners in that stretch). The Nats are 7-3 over their last ten; the Mets are 4-6.

The honest case against me is real: Early is being activated off the 60-day IL today after 87 days without a big-league pitch, so he's likely capped and short, which turns the middle of this game into a bullpen fight — and New York's pen (a 3.02 tracked relief ERA) is clearly better than Washington's, with Devin Williams and Kodai Senga rested. I accept all of that. But the four Washington arms that worked last night aren't the entire pen — Tolman, Dion, Lord and Lovelady all sat two days — and at even money I'll take the better lineup, the platoon edge on both sides of the ball, and home field over a superior bullpen in a coin-flip game. The Mets' best path is the late innings; my side's path is the other seven.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

PLATOON EDGE

  • Mark Vientos (bats R) hits 5th against Connelly Early (LHP)

    .814

Mark Vientos has a .814 OPS against left-handers over 111 at-bats, against .548 the other way over 156. He bats fifth tonight against LHP Connelly Early, the side he hits better. The gap is wide on a modest sample.

COOLING OFF

  • James Wood: .545 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .545

Wood has a .545 OPS over his last 40 AB, far below an .890 season mark that ranks among the better bats this year. Forty at-bats is too few to override that. Against the Mets, if his props dip because of the recent form, measure them against the .890 he has put up all year.

PARK WEATHER

  • Wind blowing in 16 mph at Nationals Park tonight

    IN 16

A 16 mph wind coming in from left at Nationals Park takes runs off the board, with overcast skies and 67 degrees. The total sits at 8.5. That wind is the kind of condition that suppresses carry and can push a total down.

    H+R+RBI under 1.5

    -145 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Washington Nationals

Abimelec Ortiz holds the second spot in Washington's order tonight against Jonah Tong, and the board prices his hits, runs and RBIs under 1.5 at -145. I'm on the under.

The season is the whole case. Ortiz is hitting below the Mendoza line with an on-base clip in the low .200s and a slugging mark well under .400 across 125 at-bats, and he has five home runs and 13 RBIs in 43 games. That on-base number is the engine of this bet: the hits are scarce, and without a hit the runs and RBIs have almost no path unless someone else manufactures them. September has been his worst month of the year, and he has gone hitless in his last eight at-bats across four games without a run or an RBI in that stretch.

The role gives him volume, and I won't pretend otherwise. He bats second, a spot he has held for most of the season, over 100 plate appearances, so three or four trips to the plate are coming. The problem is what he brings to them.

The one thing running his way is the hand. He bats left, Tong throws right, and Ortiz's splits point the right direction, his production against right-handers clearly better than the small sample he has against lefties. Tong has been hittable in his short big-league run, a 4.21 ERA over 25 and two-thirds innings, and Ortiz does have a two-for-two, two-RBI game from September 12 sitting in his log as proof the ceiling exists.

I take the misses over the flashes. Hits, runs and RBIs together need two events, and Ortiz's on-base skill makes the first event the hard part. His last fifteen games average under a combined one, and his last four have produced nothing at all.

    Washington Nationals

Connelly Early comes off the 60-day injured list today and makes his first start in a Washington uniform. The board asks him to allow at least one earned run, priced at -165, and I'll take that.

The case is rust and hard contact. His last big-league start came June 30, so this is a pitcher who has not faced a major-league lineup in close to three months, and he draws the top of a Mets order that has Juan Soto and Bo Bichette swinging well this week and Carson Benge coming off a home run. Early's own file invites trouble: he surrendered 15 home runs across 91 and two-thirds innings this season, he carries a first-inning ERA above four and a home ERA above four, and fourteen of his seventeen starts included at least one earned run. One mistake is all this line needs, and a first inning of adrenaline after that layoff is exactly where a rusty arm tends to leave one over the plate.

The contrary case is the best part of his resume. His final three starts before the injury were his strongest of the year, three earned runs over 16 innings with 21 strikeouts, and the Mets are the softer side of the league against left-handed pitching, which is the hand he throws with. There is also the short-leash scenario: if Washington caps him at three or four innings, the exposure to a crooked number shrinks with every out he records.

I accept both. The price is heavy and I am paying it, because a pitcher shaking off a three-month absence with a home run habit and a hard-contact profile is a pitcher who usually pays for one pitch before his night ends.
