The read
Sunday’s finale at PNC Park puts Michael Wacha opposite Lake Bachar, with Pittsburgh chasing a sweep. I’m taking Kansas City at -102 because the difference in demonstrated innings coverage carries more weight for me than Pittsburgh’s recent victories. Wacha completed six innings on 99 pitches September 15, followed by four full calendar days off. Bachar’s latest recorded start lasted two innings, and he pitched in relief September 19. Reporting describes him as an opener. A short assignment remains an estimate, but it makes Pittsburgh’s pitching beyond the opening innings central to this price.
The strongest argument against Kansas City is that Pittsburgh has several effective relievers to handle that assignment. Carmen Mlodzinski owns a 2.34 season relief ERA, Yohan Ramírez a 3.08, and Mason Montgomery has allowed no earned runs in 13⅔ innings over the last 30 days. Kansas City’s late relief has also failed in this series: Nate Pearson surrendered three runs September 18, and Steven Cruz allowed two September 19. That is the real danger to this ticket. Still, Pittsburgh’s individual relief quality does not establish today’s assignments or availability. Montgomery worked September 19; Mlodzinski last pitched September 16. Those dates describe usage, and availability remains unknown for both bullpens.
My judgment is that Wacha gives Kansas City the more dependable route through the middle innings, reducing how much relief work it needs to navigate. If he completes six innings and Bachar completes two, the remaining regulation requirements are nine outs versus 21; those are conditional scenarios, not promised workloads. Kansas City also demonstrated a scoring route against Pittsburgh’s relief when Bobby Witt Jr., Jac Caglianone and Nick Loftin singled against Camilo Doval September 19, and all three start today. I’m backing the combination of Wacha’s demonstrated length and opportunities across Pittsburgh’s pitching changes. The Royals’ bullpen keeps my confidence modest, but at -102, that is the balance I’m willing to buy.

HR THREAT
Brandon Lowe
+440Gary's Take I’m taking Brandon Lowe over 0.5 home runs at +440. Lowe has homered four times in his last five games, including one in each of the first two games of this series, and his season production against right-handed pitching is substantial: 26 home runs in 378 at-bats with a .918 OPS.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Pirates are 2-0 vs Royals this season
2-0Pittsburgh is 2-0 against Kansas City across two meetings this season and won the last meeting 6-5. Two games without a pitching or site breakdown leave limited series context.

2- GARY'S PICKMICHAEL WACHAPITCHER OUTS OVER 17.5
I’m taking Michael Wacha over 17.5 outs at -140, which requires him to complete six innings. He has cleared this line in six of his last eight starts and has completed at least six innings in five straight. This is also an established workload: Wacha averages 18.9 outs across 30 starts and enters on four full days of rest. Pittsburgh has a solid lineup, but Wacha’s 3.34 ERA and 1.10 WHIP give Kansas City a strong reason to let him work deep, especially with its bullpen carrying a 5.00 ERA for the season.
The strongest concern is the home-run ball. Wacha has allowed 27 homers in 30 starts, including three at Houston last time out, while Brandon Lowe and Oneil Cruz are swinging well. Pittsburgh owns a .754 OPS against right-handed pitching, so an early power inning could prevent him from finishing the sixth. Still, his consistent length makes six completed innings the side I want.
- THE LONG SHOTBRANDON LOWEHR OVER 0.5
I’m taking Brandon Lowe over 0.5 home runs at +440. Lowe has homered four times in his last five games, including one in each of the first two games of this series, and his season production against right-handed pitching is substantial: 26 home runs in 378 at-bats with a .918 OPS. He bats second, giving him a strong chance at four or five plate appearances. Wacha has allowed 27 home runs in 30 starts, and nine of the 10 recent scoring plays against him came via the homer. The wind blowing out to center adds a small boost at this price.
The contrary case is meaningful. Wacha has held left-handed hitters to a .609 OPS with only nine home runs in 405 at-bats, and Lowe is just 2-for-13 against him. PNC Park is also pitcher-friendly, so I’m not treating recent form as a guarantee. But +440 gives enough compensation for those risks when Lowe’s power, lineup position and Wacha’s season-long home-run tendency are combined.
