The read
Philadelphia and New York meet at Citi Field with the series level and Scott facing Painter. I’m taking the Mets at -120 because Scott’s stronger starting profile and Philadelphia’s uncertain bridge to the late innings combine into a modest advantage worth backing. Scott brings a 3.76 ERA and 1.26 WHIP against Painter’s 5.54 and 1.44. That difference alone doesn’t make the price attractive, but it matters alongside what happens if Philadelphia needs an early pitching change.
The middle innings carry my decision. Urquidy threw 64 pitches September 18, Banks threw 37, and Mayza threw 32 after also appearing September 17. My usage estimate puts less reliance on substantial repeat work from that group; their actual availability remains unknown. Bowlan’s newly reported groin strain adds another uncertainty before Duran. New York’s recent relief results offer some support: Núñez has a 0.84 ERA over the last 30 days, Lavender 2.92 and Senga 2.89. Núñez and Lavender pitched September 18, while Senga last appeared September 15, leaving three full calendar days off. None of those dates establishes readiness, but the combination gives me more confidence in New York’s possible coverage if the starters leave early.
Philadelphia’s strongest counterargument is Duran and a credible setup group if Painter keeps the game competitive. Duran’s 1.76 season ERA, backed by 79 strikeouts against nine walks, is a serious closing advantage; McFarlane and Alvarado also have encouraging recent results. Philadelphia could absolutely win through that route. I still prefer New York because that argument depends on reaching those late innings without earlier damage, while Scott gives the Mets the stronger starting foundation. Both clubs are 4–6 over their last ten, so momentum adds little. At -120, I judge the combined starting and middle-inning advantage sufficient for a modest moneyline position.

2- GARY'S PICKCHRISTIAN SCOTTPITCHER WALKS OVER 1.5
I’m taking Christian Scott over 1.5 walks at -108. Scott has issued at least two walks in five of his last eight starts, and his full-season workload—46 walks in 105 1/3 innings—supports this being more than a short-term fluctuation. Philadelphia also averages 3.20 walks per game, while Scott has completed six innings only twice across those eight starts, so he needs to miss this line within a fairly limited window.
The strongest counter is Scott’s history against Philadelphia: he owns a 1.80 ERA in two starts against this lineup, and four Phillies have gone hitless in four career at-bats against him. He also walked one or fewer in three of his last eight starts. Still, needing only two walks at nearly even money is the better side of his established control profile.
- THE LONG SHOTJUAN SOTOHR OVER 0.5
I’m taking Juan Soto over 0.5 home runs at +340. Soto has 21 homers in 239 at-bats against right-handed pitching with a 1.009 OPS, and he gets a favorable handedness matchup against Andrew Painter. Left-handed hitters have produced a .293 average, an .800 OPS and 11 home runs in 266 at-bats against Painter. Painter’s four-seam fastball has also allowed a .419 xwOBA overall. Soto has homered four times in his last 15 games and went deep in this matchup Friday, so the offered price is long enough for the underlying power opportunity.
The strongest counter is the environment and Painter’s recent improvement. Citi Field suppresses home runs, the wind is coming in from right, and Painter has allowed only six earned runs across his last three starts. His overall 8.1% barrel rate allowed is not extreme, either. This is a price-driven long shot rather than a high-probability outcome, but +340 compensates me for that volatility.
