The read
Saturday evening at Progressive Field brings the Athletics and Guardians together for the middle game of their series, with Jacob Lopez facing Tanner Bibee. I’m backing Cleveland because its lineup alignment and bullpen performance support the same winning path. The Guardians can send six hitters to the right side against Lopez, who has allowed an .839 OPS to right-handed hitters versus .603 to lefties. That does not make every Cleveland hitter a favorable individual matchup, but it makes Lopez’s overall numbers less representative of the order he faces tonight. Bibee’s latest start also offers encouragement: he completed 6⅔ innings on 96 pitches, while Lopez needed 102 pitches for 3⅔ innings in his latest appearance.
The bullpen comparison carries substantial weight for me. Cleveland posted a 2.78 ERA and 0.96 WHIP across the sampled 55 relief innings, versus the Athletics’ 4.03 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 51⅓. Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, Erik Sabrowski and Tim Herrin give that advantage identifiable contributors. Tonight’s availability remains unknown: Smith and Gaddis pitched September 15, 16 and 18, with September 17 off. I’m treating a late Gaddis-to-Smith finish as a conditional usage estimate. The Athletics have credible alternatives in Hogan Harris and Luis Medina, so this wager depends on Cleveland building an advantage as well as protecting it.
The strongest objection is the price. Lopez’s 3.51 xERA against Bibee’s 4.28 challenges how much separation the market should assign the starters; it does not mean Lopez is owed a better outing tonight. Bibee’s five-start ERA is also higher, so his latest rebound cannot erase the preceding trouble. Nevertheless, Cleveland’s right-side lineup concentration and broader relief support carry more weight in my read than the expected-stat objection. At -184, I’m accepting a substantial price for those combined advantages, with moderate conviction. My decision is Cleveland to win outright; neither yesterday’s result nor division urgency is doing the work here.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKJO ADELLWALKS UNDER 0.5
I’m taking Jo Adell under 0.5 walks at -197. Adell has walked in only three of his last 15 games and has just 29 walks across 572 at-bats this season. His aggressive profile has produced 153 strikeouts, and he is likely to attack a hittable left-hander rather than work deep counts. The price is heavy, but his season-long frequency still supports the under.
The strongest objection is Jacob Lopez’s command. Lopez has issued 56 walks in 114⅔ innings, and Adell’s .972 OPS against lefties could encourage Lopez to work carefully with the cleanup hitter. Adell should also receive around four plate appearances. Those factors keep this from being a higher-confidence play at nearly 2-to-1 odds.
- GARY'S PICKTANNER BIBEEPITCHER EARNED RUNS OVER 1.5
I’m taking Tanner Bibee over 1.5 earned runs at -150. He has allowed at least two earned runs in seven of his last eight starts, including 12 earned runs over 15 innings in his three September outings. The matchup offers a clear path through power: Bibee has surrendered 28 home runs in 31 starts, while the Athletics have hit 122 homers with a .718 OPS against right-handed pitching. Four left-handed bats are in Oakland’s order, and Bibee has allowed 21 homers and a .738 OPS to left-handed hitters this season.
The strongest contrary evidence is Bibee’s latest start, when he held Minnesota to two earned runs across 6⅔ innings with seven strikeouts. Oakland has also averaged only 3.3 runs over its last 10 games, and the lower third of tonight’s order enters in poor form. Even so, that strong Bibee outing still cleared this low line, and his recent frequency makes two earned runs the side I want.
