The read
Friday night under the dome in St. Pete, first pitch 7:10, and it's two left-handers with the AL East leader hosting a Wild Card club that just flew in from Arlington. Two lefties, a 0.93 park factor, no wind, no weather — this one gets decided in the margins, and the margins belong to Tampa Bay. The thing that carries my ticket is the pitch-type overlap. Ranger Suarez throws his sinker 23.9 percent of the time and his four-seamer 22.4 percent — roughly 46 percent of everything he throws — and those are his two worst pitches by expected results (.339 and .320 xwOBA allowed). Junior Caminero's measured lines against exactly those two: .341 with a .400 xwOBA and .581 slugging on sinkers across 148 plate appearances, .301 with a .394 xwOBA and .655 slugging on four-seamers across 133. Add that Suarez runs a reverse split (.749 OPS to lefties, .601 to righties) and that both Caminero and Jonathan Aranda hit left-handed pitching at .296 with a .946 OPS on 140-plus at-bat samples, and the top of this Rays order is sitting on the side of the platoon Suarez can't protect. Caminero has a .947 OPS at home with 22 of his homers here; Yandy Díaz a .933.
The second leg is the ninth inning. Willson Contreras — Boston's best bat at .276, 27 homers, .905 OPS — got scratched with a bruised right hand reported after Thursday's game, and Aroldis Chapman was ruled unavailable Thursday with lat tightness, day to day. Boston's other three late arms all threw Thursday. Bryan Baker has two full days off, 40 saves, a 1.52 ERA and an 0.89 WHIP. In a game this shape, that asymmetry is worth more than a run of season-long ERAs.
The honest counter: Suarez is the better contact suppressor by a wide margin — 5.6 percent barrels allowed against Seymour's 10, and Seymour has real home-run exposure. And Boston's dog price is partly built off Seymour's fragile 4.27 ERA when his xERA sits at 3.48 — the market is selling a number that overstates how hittable he's been. That cuts toward the Rays, not away. Boston's offense has managed 3.3 runs a game over ten, and now it's short its anchor.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
COOLING OFF
Yandy Diaz: .553 OPS in Last 15 Days
.553Yandy Diaz has a .553 OPS over the last 15 days, a 57-at-bat sample, 0.259 below his .812 season OPS. Those 57 at-bats are the recent portion of a season line that still reads .812.
FIRST INNING
BOS have gone quiet in the 1st: runs in 1 of their last 10
1/10BOS scored in the first inning in 1 of the 10 sampled games. 2026 first-inning pitching samples — Ian Seymour: 1.93 ERA, .231 opponent AVG across 14.0 IP, 2 HR; Ranger Suarez: 2.77 ERA, .215 opponent AVG across 26.0 IP, 2 HR.
RUNNING GAME
Green light: Tampa Bay Rays run, and Connor Wong has caught just 13%
13% CSConnor Wong has caught 7 of 53 runners this season, 13%. Tampa Bay attempts 1.4 steals a game, so the club that runs most is meeting the least resistance behind the plate, and runners reaching first are one uncontested base from scoring position.
BALLPARK
Ian Seymour's ERA drops to 3.75 at Tropicana Field
3.75Ian Seymour has a 3.75 ERA over 69.2 innings in 24 games at Tropicana Field, versus 4.96 across 52.2 innings elsewhere; hitters bat .204 off him there. The split cannot show whether the park or pitcher is driving it.
STREAK
TB games have gone UNDER 6 straight
U6Six straight unders in Tampa Bay games: 8 combined runs a game against numbers averaging about 10.3. Tonight's total is 8.5, nearly two runs below that streak average, so the cushion the run has been clearing is thinner.
TB have won 6 straight
W6Tampa Bay's six-game win streak carries a +24 run margin, roughly four runs a game, and they are 8-2 in their last 10. Nothing on Boston's side is supplied here, so there's no basis for judging how hard the streak gets tested.
TEAM RECORD
Red Sox 6-2 in Ranger Suarez's last 8 starts
6-2The Red Sox are 6-2 in Ranger Suarez’s last eight starts this season. He starts tonight at Tampa Bay.
REGRESSION

Jonny DeLuca: .263 AVG vs .236 xBA
.236Jonny DeLuca's .263 average comes against a .236 expected (xBA) on 332 plate appearances. His wOBA sits at .310 against a .264 expected (xwOBA). Statcast grades the quality of his contact rather than the results, and the expected marks sit below what he has actually posted.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKIAN SEYMOURPITCHER HITS ALLOWED OVER 3.5
Seymour has allowed four or more hits in six straight starts and seven of his last eight, and his 4.6 hits allowed per start over the full season backs up the pattern rather than looking like a fluke stretch. The underlying quality supports it too — a 37.4 percent hard-hit rate and 10 percent barrel rate allowed, the profile of a pitcher who gives up loud contact even on nights when the strikeout total looks strong. He's also only averaging under 15 outs a start, so this volume of hits is showing up in shortened outings, not accumulating over deep ones. And he's back at Tropicana tonight, where he's actually been more hittable this year — a 5.02 ERA in nine home starts against a 3.75 mark on the road.
The one blemish in this recent window was, fittingly, the last time he saw this Red Sox lineup, on July 18 — just two hits allowed, though with three earned runs in three innings, so it wasn't exactly clean. That was also before Boston added Adley Rutschman at the trade deadline, so it isn't quite the same lineup walking in tonight. Boston's offense has cooled some, averaging 3.3 runs a game over its last ten, but six straight starts clearing this number is the stronger signal to lean on. At -154 I need better than 60 percent, and a pitcher averaging 4.6 hits a start gets there without needing much to break right.
- GARY'S PICKTREVOR STORYHITS OVER 0.5
Story has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games, and Thursday's go-ahead three-run homer off Jacob Latz was just the loudest note in a stretch where his bat looks nothing like a guy still shaking off sports hernia surgery. He's hitting .333 over his last week and .298 over his last two, and the matchup doesn't work against the streak the way it might for some of his teammates — his career average is actually a touch higher against lefties (.250) than righties (.238), so Seymour being a southpaw isn't a strike against him. He also sees more of the plate than nearly anyone in this Boston order right now, 4.2 plate appearances a game hitting fifth, which means more looks at clearing just half a hit.
The honest counter: this is a hot stretch sitting on top of a .246 season average, and the one game he didn't get a hit in his last 15 is proof it isn't automatic. Tropicana is a pitcher-friendly building that knocks down offense across the board, dome and all, and he's never faced Seymour before so there's no personal history to lean on. But at -145 I only need to clear about 59 percent, and a hitter this locked in, seeing this many pitches a night, gets there.
