The read

Friday night in Flushing, the Mets closing out their final home stand of the year with nothing left to play for, and Philadelphia rolls in having just shut them out and still chasing a wild card. The market looked at the pitching plan — a real starter for New York, a bullpen game for the Phillies — and made a 69-win team a home favorite over an 85-win team. That label is doing all the work in this price, and I'm taking the other side of it.

Here's what carries the pick: you cannot punish a patchwork pitching plan if you can't reach it with traffic, and the Mets have scored 1.4 runs per game over their last five, losing all five. They were blanked last night. They lost Jared Young to a concussion IL this morning, and he'd been hitting .303 with runners in scoring position. And the top of that order has a real problem with the look Philadelphia will show — Lindor is at .186 with a .635 OPS against left-handed pitching, Soto .254/.749, and the arms fronting and closing this bullpen game are lefties. A bullpen game isn't a weakness against this specific lineup; it's a matchup tool. Meanwhile the man New York is counting on has a 3.44 ERA against a 4.61 xERA — the market is paying full freight for a fragile number, not a sturdy one — and he yields .262 with a .750 OPS and 8 homers to righties, which is exactly what Philadelphia stacks against him behind Schwarber, who carries no platoon penalty at all (.266, .912 OPS, 15 homers off lefties).

The honest argument against me: Duran worked Sept 16 and Sept 17, and Bowlan was diagnosed with a mild right groin strain today. If this is one run in the eighth, Philadelphia's two best late arms are a question mark. I'll live with it. Urquidy has six multi-inning outings this year including a 65-pitch, 4-inning night, McFarlane hasn't worked since the 13th, and the wind is blowing in nine miles an hour at a park that already plays at 0.95. Give me the better lineup, the better run-prevention team, and a plus price.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

STARTER FORM

  • Andrew Painter: 3.18 ERA over his last 3 starts

    3.18

Andrew Painter has a 3.18 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 15 strikeouts over 17 innings in his last 3 starts. His season marks are a 5.54 ERA and 1.44 WHIP entering Philadelphia at New York.

  • Zac Thornton: 5.29 ERA over his last 3 starts

    5.29

Zac Thornton has allowed 10 earned runs and 18 hits over 17 innings in his last three starts, producing a 5.29 ERA. That is 1.86 runs above his 3.44 season ERA entering Philadelphia at New York.

PLATOON EDGE

  • Mark Vientos (bats R) hits 5th against Tim Mayza (LHP)

    .885

Vientos posts an .885 OPS against left-handers over 101 AB, against .526 in 153 AB versus righties. Mayza is a lefty, so the fifth spot places him on the side where his production has been concentrated.

HEAT CHECK

  • A.J. Ewing: 1.119 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.119

A.J. Ewing has a 1.119 OPS over the last 15 days across 44 AB. That is 0.409 above his .710 season baseline.

COOLING OFF

  • Bryson Stott: .381 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .381

Bryson Stott has a .381 OPS over the last 15 days across 39 AB. That is 0.33 below his .711 season OPS.

BALLPARK

  • Andrew Painter's ERA jumps to 6.11 at Citi Field

    6.11

Andrew Painter has a 6.11 ERA over 53.0 innings in 11 games at Citi Field, versus 5.05 across 62.1 innings elsewhere; hitters bat .283 against him here. The split shows worse past results at this venue but cannot establish the cause or what follows tonight.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Phillies are 6-4 vs Mets this season

    6-4

The Phillies are 6-4 against the Mets across 10 meetings this season and won the last one 3-0. The arms, earlier venues and results of the other nine are not supplied.

STREAK

  • NYM have lost 5 straight

    L5

The Mets have lost five straight and been outscored by 14 runs over the skid, just under three runs a game. They are 4-6 in their last 10, so the whole of the damage falls inside this stretch.

REGRESSION

  • Edmundo Sosa: .239 AVG vs .276 xBA

    .276

Edmundo Sosa's .239 average comes against a .276 expected (xBA) on 237 plate appearances. His wOBA sits at .292 against a .328 expected (xwOBA). Statcast grades the quality of his contact rather than the results, and the expected marks sit above what he has actually posted.

    KYLE SCHWARBERWALKS OVER 0.5
    MLBPhiladelphia Phillies· +114

    Kyle Schwarber
    Walks over 0.5

    +114 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Philadelphia Phillies

Schwarber leads off the Phillies order and does the one thing at the plate as consistently as anyone in the league: he takes the walk. Ninety-five of them this season, a pace of better than six per ten games, and he's cleared this exact number in 8 of his last 15. He worked one off Nolan McLean just last night in this same series, so the swing decisions are current, not old news. Facing a lefty in Zac Thornton changes very little here — Schwarber's plate discipline doesn't have a platoon split, and a hitter with his power forces pitchers to be careful regardless of which arm they throw with. At plus money for half a walk, I don't need him to do this in even half his games to cash, and his season-long rate clears that bar comfortably.

The case against me: Thornton doesn't give out free passes carelessly. Sixteen walks in over 73 innings is a tidy number, built on a deep mix he uses to get ahead and stay ahead in counts rather than nibble. If he's around the zone tonight the way he's been most of this season, that works against the over. And Schwarber himself is in a genuine cold stretch by the surface numbers — a .130 average over his last week — which can push a hitter to expand the zone out of frustration rather than sit back and take his walk. I'm still taking the price.

  • THE LONG SHOT
    KYLE SCHWARBERHR OVER 0.5
    MLBPhiladelphia Phillies· +295

    Kyle Schwarber
    HR over 0.5

    +295 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Philadelphia Phillies

One long shot off the home run board, and it's Schwarber again. Forty-five home runs this season is a serious number, and he's gone deep in 5 of his last 15 games — well clear of what plus-295 needs to break even. This isn't a platoon play that evaporates against same-side pitching, either: his .912 OPS against left-handers is actually his better platoon split, so Thornton throwing left-handed does nothing to shield him. And Thornton has a real recent home run problem of his own — he's allowed one in nearly every one of his last six starts, including a two-homer night apiece from Devers and Koss in the same game three weeks ago. Even Schwarber's own slump argues for this bet rather than against it: he's hitting just .185 in September, but five of his ten hits this month have left the yard. That's exactly the shape of hitter this line needs — he doesn't have to be hitting for average to hit this.

The honest case against it: Citi Field is a legitimate pitcher's park that suppresses home runs with its dimensions, and the wind tonight is blowing in from center field, working directly against fly-ball carry. Schwarber is cold by the ordinary measures, and Thornton's most recent start — seven strong innings in the Bronx — was his best of the past month, a sign the homer-prone stretch isn't guaranteed to show up again tonight. I'm still willing to take the long shot at this price.

  • GARY'S PICK
    CARSON BENGESINGLES OVER 0.5
    MLBNew York Mets· -103

    Carson Benge
    Singles over 0.5

    -103 · CASHED · ACTUAL 2

    New York Mets

Benge hits cleanup for a Mets lineup playing out the string, and he does damage in the most repeatable way a hitter can: contact, legs, and a hit in roughly half his starts — 8 of his last 15 games, right in line with his season pace. The pitching plan working against him tonight matters here. Tim Mayza is listed as the starter, but he's opening, not starting — he worked the eighth inning in relief last night and is handing this game to José Urquidy, a waiver claim from two days ago, for the bulk of the innings. That means most of Benge's at-bats tonight project against Urquidy, a right-hander who's been hit hard in long relief this year and just posted a 65-pitch, four-inning outing in which he allowed five hits. A speed-and-contact bat facing a bulk arm that hasn't missed many bats is exactly the matchup that produces a cheap single, and at a price this close to even, I like the side with the better recent track record of putting the ball in play.

Against me: Benge has cooled off, hitting .212 over his last 15 days, and this single-only market is priced far closer to even than the broader any-hit line, which tells me the book expects a real share of his production to come as extra-base hits rather than singles when he connects — he's a 22-steal, gap-power threat, not a pure slap hitter. And if Mayza stretches his opener stint even one batter longer than expected, Benge picks up a left-on-left look, a matchup where his numbers are a real step down from what he does against right-handers.
