The read

Friday night at Dodger Stadium, Apple TV, and the oldest rivalry in the sport gets a strange edition — a 93-win club with its banner already hung against a Giants team whose only stakes left are next year's evaluations. Look past the records, though, because the card the Dodgers actually posted tonight isn't the one this price was built on.

Two things carry this ticket. First, Glasnow is walking into his three worst contexts stacked on top of each other. He's 22 innings into a return from a four-month layoff, he's allowed four earned runs in each of his last two starts, and he's carrying a 5.09 ERA across his last five. His home ERA is 4.56 over 23.2 innings against 2.84 on the road, and his night ERA is 4.20 over 30 innings against 2.84 in daylight. Tonight is home, at night. Second, the Giants have been living in tight games — nine of their last ten were decided by two runs or fewer, six of them by exactly one — and they arrive rested off a Thursday off day while the Dodgers finished a day game in Cincinnati yesterday and flew across the country.

The rest is support. Los Angeles has Muncy on the bench tonight after he went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the finale, and their three lefty bats draw a left-hander. Their pen used Treinen, Wrobleski and Halvorsen yesterday, Tanner Scott carries a 7.71 September ERA, and Díaz was activated today with Roberts stating outright he's low-leverage only. San Francisco, meanwhile, has Wilkinson (four days down, three scoreless last time out) and Marte (five days down, five innings last time out) for real length behind a short rookie start, plus Trent Harris at a 0.61 ERA across his last 14.2 relief innings.

The case against me is Perdomo, and it's a good one — three MLB starts, a fastball he throws 46.5% of the time that's been hit for a .444 average, and a 4.36 xERA underneath a 3.68 ERA that tells you the market is right to treat his results as fragile. Glasnow's 3.11 xERA says the opposite about him. I'm not betting on regression. I'm betting that a rested dog who plays every game by a run, against a diluted lineup and a starter in his softest spot, is worth more than 45%.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

PLATOON EDGE

  • Drew Gilbert (bats L) draws Tyler Glasnow (RHP), batting 1st

    .781

Gilbert's .781 OPS against right-handers spans 283 AB, next to .219 in 43 AB the other way, and Glasnow is right-handed. Batting leadoff puts him on the side that holds nearly all his at-bats, a gap a blended season line would flatten.

HEAT CHECK

  • Teoscar Hernandez: 1.205 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.205

Teoscar Hernandez has a 1.205 OPS over the last 15 days across 44 AB. That is 0.446 above his .759 season mark.

COOLING OFF

  • Freddie Freeman: .381 OPS in L15 — draws LHP Cesar Perdomo

    .381

Freeman is at a .381 OPS over the last 15 days on 39 AB, down 0.436 from his .817 season mark. Against LHP Cesar Perdomo he is on his weaker side, a .691 OPS over 186 AB — the thinner of his two splits.

  • Jung Hoo Lee: .421 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .421

Jung Hoo Lee has a .421 OPS over the last 15 days across 49 AB. That is 0.293 below his .714 season OPS.

BALLPARK

  • In 4 games at Dodger Stadium, Tyler Glasnow pitches to a 4.56 ERA

    4.56

Tyler Glasnow has a 4.56 ERA over 23.2 innings in four games at Dodger Stadium, versus 2.84 across 38.0 innings elsewhere; hitters bat .212 off him there. Four home games are too limited to distinguish park effect from pitcher performance.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Giants are 4-3 vs Dodgers this season

    4-3

The Giants are 4-3 against the Dodgers across seven meetings this season, but Los Angeles won the last one 5-2. The arms, prior venues and results of the other six are not supplied.

SITUATIONAL

  • No off day for LAD in 10 days

    B2B+

The Dodgers have gone 10 days without an off day entering tonight. The Giants had yesterday off before visiting Los Angeles.

REGRESSION

  • Jonah Cox: .294 AVG vs .223 xBA

    .223

Jonah Cox carries a .294 average against a .223 xBA, with a .340 wOBA versus a .273 xwOBA. The contact-quality marks sit well under the results in both cases. The sample is 132 plate appearances.
