The read
Friday night under a closed roof in Houston, last home series of the year, a division lead worth exactly one game — and Atlanta rolls in with a chance to clinch. The number next to Tyler Mahle's name reads 3.91, and that number is the whole reason I'm here. Mahle was traded into this rotation in early August, and his season ERA is diluted by everything he did before that. Since he put on the Atlanta uniform: seven starts, 43 1/3 innings, six earned runs, thirty-eight strikeouts against six walks total. He's gone at least five innings in every one of them and six-plus in six, including seven innings on 97 pitches his last time out. The market is paying for a 3.91 pitcher. Atlanta is handing the ball to something else entirely.
The second piece is what happens when the starters leave. Houston played last night and emptied the tank — five pitchers, including Ethan Pecko for 71 pitches in bulk relief behind an opener. The rested arms behind Hader and Abreu have been leaking: Bennett Sousa at 8.10 over his last thirty days, Enyel De Los Santos at 7.59. Atlanta had Thursday off. Raisel Iglesias (2.73 season, 0.87 over his last thirty) and Didier Fuentes (1.76 season, 0.60 over his last thirty) are both on full rest. Peter Lambert averages under six innings a start. If this is tight in the seventh, I want the club with the rested back end.
The argument against me is big and it's named Yordan Alvarez — .364 with a 1.175 OPS at home, .329 against right-handers, and .333 with a 1.099 OPS with men on, .349 in scoring position. Every condition tonight suits him. Lambert's line against lefties (.195, .594 OPS) points straight at Atlanta's lefty-heavy top of the order, and Matt Olson has been a solo-shot bat, .215 in scoring position. I know all of it and I'm still on Atlanta. Alvarez is one hitter in nine, and the Braves staff has been nearly a run better per nine across the season (3.64 to 4.51). At -116 I'm paying a coin-flip price for the better arm tonight and the better bullpen behind him.

Props on this game
3- GARY'S PICKSEAN MURPHYH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
The number is half a run produced — one hit, one run scored, or one RBI — and Murphy has cleared it in ten of his last fifteen games. At -155 the market needs about 61 percent, his recent rate is clearing 67. What I like is how he's been getting there lately. In each of his last two games he's actually played, he drove in a run without recording a hit at all — a groundout that scored a runner from third against the Cubs, then a forceout RBI a few days before that. This prop doesn't ask for a barrel, it asks for one baserunner event, and a bat finding productive outs during a genuine cold stretch still clears that bar more often than not. He's also on the better side of a thin career platoon split, hitting right-handed against a Lambert staff that has allowed a .300 average to right-handed hitters this year against .212 for lefties.
The other side of this is real. Murphy is hitting .074 over his last fifteen days and carries a .250 on-base percentage in a season limited to 89 at-bats — this is a shallow, injury-interrupted sample and nobody should pretend otherwise. But the low bar here is exactly why I'm comfortable laying -155 on a catcher batting ninth: he doesn't need to hit his way into this, he just needs one contact event to fall his way, and lately even his outs have been doing that.
- GARY'S PICKPETER LAMBERTK'S OVER 4.5
Lambert is averaging 5.4 strikeouts a start across 26 turns this season and has cleared this 4.5 line in five of his last eight, against a -130 price that needs about 57 percent to break even. The stuff backs it up: his changeup is generating a 31 percent whiff rate at nearly a quarter of his total pitches, and his four-seamer is missing bats at almost 25 percent on top of that. Atlanta strikes out right around 8.1 times a game as a team this year, enough swing-and-miss in the lineup for a pitcher with this kind of bat-missing changeup to work with, even with several of their bats running hot right now.
What keeps this from being an easy call is his own inconsistency. His last time out he went six innings against Tampa Bay and only got to four strikeouts — an under — and his innings have bounced around all summer, from three and two-thirds against the Angels to seven against Arizona. If he gets knocked out early tonight, five strikeouts stops being a given. I'm still taking the over because the season rate and the raw stuff both point the same direction, and one shorter night in a sample of eight shouldn't outweigh the pitch quality that's produced this rate all year.
- THE LONG SHOTJEREMY PENAHR OVER 0.5
This is the one long shot I'll take tonight. The fifteen-game window shows home runs in just two of his last fifteen games, but that number is stale — three of those home runs came in his last three games, with a homer in each of his last two and an 8-for-13, three-homer stretch through the just-finished Royals series. That's current form, not a bat that got hot once and cooled off. He's a right-handed hitter leading off at home, where the Crawford Boxes in left field are built for exactly his pull side, and the leadoff spot all but guarantees him four looks. Mahle has also allowed a .300 average and an .817 OPS to right-handed hitters this season, a real gap from the .212 he's held left-handed bats to.
The strongest thing working against this is Mahle's own recent form — two earned runs in nineteen and two-thirds innings across his last three starts, a 0.92 ERA, which is not the profile of a pitcher who's about to get beat deep. Pena is also just 1-for-7 in his career against him, though that sample is too small to mean much either way. Plus-575 isn't asking me to believe he goes deep every night, just that a hitter this hot, in this park, against this platoon split, does it once tonight, and I'll take that price.
