The read

Rubber game under a closed roof in Houston, with the Astros tied for the AL West lead and ten to play, and the eliminated Royals showing up Wednesday night like a team that wants to ruin somebody's September. Seth Lugo gets the ball for Kansas City against an Astros opener plan, and the line has Houston at -154.

Two things carry this pick for me. First, the back of the game. Lugo has not finished the sixth inning since Aug 19, so Kansas City is handing four innings to a bullpen that reporting ranks last in the majors by FIP and K-BB%, and its three highest-leverage arms, Kimbrel, Pearson and Cruz, all pitched last night. Pearson has three appearances in the last seven days and Cruz has allowed 12 homers in 54.1 innings. Houston's answer in the same innings is Bryan Abreu, at a 1.88 ERA over his last 30 days, and Josh Hader, at 0.85 with 26 saves and none blown, both reported rested and available for tonight. Second, the matchup at the plate. Lugo is allowing a .304 average and .849 OPS to left-handed hitters over 401 at-bats this season, and Yordan Alvarez, who leads the majors in OPS, bats second at home. Lugo's expected ERA sits right on top of his actual mark, so nobody is paying for a mirage here; he is simply a contact-heavy starter with a lefty problem walking into the wrong lineup and the wrong park.

The honest counter is that Houston's bats are cold, 2.6 runs a game over the last five and 3-7 over ten, and tonight's pitching plan is Miguel Ullola opening for rookie Ethan Pecko, whose walks run high. If that goes sideways early, the bridge is Enyel De Los Santos and Bryan King, who both pitched yesterday and have been hit hard for a month. I took Houston anyway because the plan the log shows is coherent: Ullola has struck out ten and walked one in eight major-league innings, Pecko's last turn was 5.2 innings and one run, and if they get through six with a lead the game goes straight to Abreu and Hader. Kansas City has no version of that path tonight. In a game that projects low-scoring and close, the team with the elite ninth inning and the last at-bat is the one I trust.

    MLBHouston Astros· -115

    Daulton Varsho
    H+R+RBI under 1.5

    -115 · LOST · ACTUAL 3

    Houston Astros

Daulton Varsho's line is 1.5 combined hits, runs and RBIs, and I'll take the under at -115. Varsho is ice cold right now — 2-for-21 with no home runs over his last seven games and 9-for-47 over his last 15, an OPS south of .550 across that stretch. His season line is a .224/.285/.355 mess, and he doesn't have a platoon hole to exploit either way: he's roughly a .620 OPS hitter against lefties and a .648 OPS hitter against righties, so tonight's matchup with a right-hander doesn't project as an obvious get-right spot. He's gone under this number in 12 of his last 15 games, and the only real contribution he's had in this series so far was a single off a reliever in the ninth inning of a game that was already decided.

Batting sixth gets him a fair number of plate appearances, which is the honest counter here — four trips to the plate a night means a single and a run scored gets this to a push, and one extra-base knock with a man on gets it to an over in a hurry. Lugo has also been far more hittable against lefties than righties this season, so if Varsho is going to find his swing, tonight is as good a matchup as he'll see. But a hitter this cold, at a price this close to even money, is exactly where I want to be on the under.

  • GARY'S PICK
    TAYLOR TRAMMELLH+R+RBI UNDER 1.5
    MLBHouston Astros· -148

    Taylor Trammell
    H+R+RBI under 1.5

    -148 · LOST · ACTUAL 4

    Houston Astros

The number is 1.5 combined hits, runs and RBIs for Taylor Trammell, and I'm taking the under at -148. Trammell is back in the Astros lineup tonight batting seventh after sitting out the first two games of this series, and I don't see the profile of a guy who clears this line very often. He's a .204 hitter on the season with a .645 OPS in 235 at-bats, and even against right-handers — his better side of the platoon split — he's just a .219/.688 hitter with limited pop. Over his last 15 games he's gone under this number 12 times, and his season rate of 1.1 combined hits/runs/RBIs a game sits comfortably below the 1.5 mark. Batting seventh, sandwiched between a cold Daulton Varsho ahead of him and light-hitting Cam Smith and LaMonte Wade Jr. behind him, doesn't set him up for many extra run-scoring or RBI chances either.

The one thing that gives me pause is Seth Lugo himself. Lugo has been genuinely bad against left-handed hitters this season — a .304 average and .849 OPS allowed — while he's a respectable .745 OPS pitcher against right-handers. Trammell hits left-handed, so he's catching Lugo on the side of the plate where Lugo has actually struggled, and that's a real crack in this number. But Trammell's individual production is weak enough, and he's coming off a stretch away from the team without game action, that I'm still comfortable laying the price on the under.

  • THE LONG SHOT
    YAINER DIAZHR OVER 0.5
    MLBHouston Astros· +600

    Yainer Diaz
    HR over 0.5

    +600 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Houston Astros

I'm taking Yainer Diaz to hit a home run at +600, the one swing I want off tonight's long-ball board. Diaz is playing the best baseball of his season right now — a .410 average and better than a 1.000 OPS over his last 15 games, with September shaping up as his best month of the year by a wide margin. He already has a home run in this series, a ninth-inning shot Wednesday night, and he's a career 3-for-5 against Seth Lugo, small as that sample is. The broader platoon split points the same direction: 11 of his 12 home runs this season have come against right-handed pitching, and Lugo is a right-hander whose fly-ball tendencies have shown up as home run trouble in more than one of his last six starts.

The honest hole in this pick is that Diaz's hot stretch has been built on hard contact and average more than power — he has just the one home run to show for that .410 clip over his last 15 games, so this is a bet that the power catches up to the rest of his surge, not a bet on a hitter who's already running hot on the long ball. But with the matchup, the platoon edge, and a pitcher who's had trouble keeping the ball in the yard, +600 is a fair number to take that swing at.
