The read
Nola versus McLean under the Citi Field lights, with Philadelphia chasing a Wild Card spot and New York opening its final home stand of the season. The books make the Mets a -130 favorite, and I am taking the other side.
The pick rides on one thing: the price is built on a version of Aaron Nola who has not pitched since early August. The market sees a 4.69 ERA and a 6-10 record. What I see is 7 earned runs across his last five starts, a 2.01 ERA in that window, and eight straight outings of three runs or fewer. His xERA sat at 4.07 all year, so the market has been paying for a fragile ugly number, not a solid one. Meanwhile McLean's shiny 3.24 has cracks in the process: 16 walks in 30 innings over his last five, 25 strikeouts in that span against a season rate near 10 per nine, and 10 hits with two homers at Yankee Stadium last time out. This is closer to a coin flip on the mound than +110 says.
The second lever is the Mets offense. Seven runs in their last four games, Lindor 2-for-16, Soto 3-for-16, and the bottom of the order tonight is Alvarez, Baty and Morabito with Semien out. Lindor and Young both carry sub-.700 OPS marks at night. Philadelphia brings Harper at a 1.009 OPS against right-handers and Schwarber at 1.028 with runners on base. If McLean's walks continue, those two are the swing. New York's bullpen also took a real hit inside the last 24 hours: Stock and Duarte went on the IL yesterday, and Weisenburger and Yan combined for 84 pitches last night. Behind Lavender, Núñez and Senga, it is thin.
The best argument against me is McLean's July start against this exact lineup, 6 shutout innings, 2 hits, 10 strikeouts, plus Soto's 1.017 OPS at home and Nola's 5 homers allowed in 11 innings against the Mets this year. Those are real. But that McLean gem was one game two months ago before the walks crept in, Nola's Mets homers came at Citizens Bank Park and tonight is a 0.95 park, and Soto cannot carry a lineup producing seven runs in four games by himself. The Phillies have the stakes, a 43-34 road record, the 5-4 season series edge, and a starter who has matched the favorite pitch for pitch for six weeks. Plus money on that is the bet.

3- GARY'S PICKAARON NOLAPITCHER WALKS OVER 1.5
Everyone's talking about Nola's second-half turnaround, and it's real, but it wasn't built on sharper command. He's walked at least two hitters in six of his last eight starts, and he's averaging 1.8 free passes a turn across all 30 outings this season. The tightened ERA has come from limiting damage once runners reach base, not from finding the strike zone more often. Part of that caution has a name: Juan Soto is 12-for-43 with 5 home runs against Nola for his career, and Francisco Lindor has 8 hits in 41 at-bats against him too. Against a lineup that has already done real damage to him, the incentive is to work the edges of the zone rather than challenge it, and that's how the walks pile up.
The case against me is the one start in this stretch where he was clean, a single walk against Atlanta on September 6, proof he can pound the zone when everything is working. But that was his only start below two walks aside from a walk-free outing against Miami on August 19, and the rest of the log says the free passes keep showing up even in his best months. At -138 I only need to clear a number he's already cleared six times in his last eight tries, and I like taking that price against a lineup that has given him plenty of reasons to nibble.
- GARY'S PICKNOLAN MCLEANPITCHER EARNED RUNS UNDER 2.5
McLean has kept his ERA at 3.24 by dominating at the one place that matters tonight: home. His last three starts at Citi Field have produced a 1.42 ERA, and the ballpark does him favors on top of that, with deep dimensions that have suppressed home runs all year. Zoom out further and he has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his last eight starts overall, comfortably clearing what -156 is asking for.
The honest complication is that his full-season home ERA, 3.57, actually runs a shade worse than his road number, so home has not been an automatic feature of his season, just his last few turns there. He is also walking more batters than his ERA suggests, at least two in five of his last six outings, which puts runners on base even when they don't score. And his very last time out, five earned runs allowed at Yankee Stadium with two home runs surrendered, snapped a run of four straight starts without allowing one, a reminder his stuff can get hit hard when he's off. Bryce Harper is running a 1.003 OPS against right-handers this year, and Kyle Schwarber can change a game with one swing regardless of his average, so Philadelphia has the bats to erase this number fast if McLean loses the strike zone. I'm still taking the under because the recent home starts and the park factor point the same direction, and his one bad recent outing came on the road, not here.
- THE LONG SHOTFRANCISCO LINDORHR OVER 0.5
Lindor is running hot in a way that's easy to miss if you only look at the season line. He has 6 home runs in his last 59 at-bats, good for an .845 OPS over his last 15 days even with a modest .220 average in that stretch, and he has already gone deep in 5 of his last 15 games. His power plays up specifically against right-handed pitching, where he has hit 15 of his 20 home runs this season, and Nola fits that profile tonight. At plus-400 I only need this to land about once every five tries, and his own recent rate is running well ahead of that.
The number that argues against me is his history with this specific pitcher: just 1 home run in 41 career at-bats against Nola, and Citi Field itself is built to work against exactly this kind of bet, with the deep outfield that has suppressed home runs all year. That career sample against Nola is thin enough that I won't weigh it heavily against a switch-hitter seeing the ball this well right now, and hitters running hot in September tend to find a way to turn on one mistake no matter who is on the mound. I'll take my shot at the long price.
