The read

Series finale at the Trop, 1:10 first pitch, Drew Rasmussen going for the sweep against Jeffrey Springs, back in the building for the first time since Tampa Bay traded him. The Rays are the right side of the moneyline, but at -260 that ticket pays nothing, and the run line is where this game has actually been living. Both games of this series ended one-run: 2-1 in ten innings, then 4-3. That is not a fluke pattern for Rasmussen games. Tampa Bay has won his last ten starts, and five of those ten were by exactly one run, including 1-0 twice. He is 14-5 with a 2.81 ERA and has held opponents to two runs or fewer in 21 of 28 starts, so I expect him to be good. I just do not expect the margin to run away in a dome with a 0.93 park factor.

The part of Oakland that has kept these games tight is the bullpen, and it is legitimately hot. Over the last 30 days Harris (1.42), Hartlieb (1.08), Blewett (2.16), Medina (2.25) and Alvarado (2.45) all carry ERAs under 2.50, and the pen threw 5.1 scoreless innings Wednesday after Basso left in the third. Hartlieb, Roycroft and Rock have not pitched since Sunday or earlier. Tampa Bay's bridge is the thinner one today. Kelly and Booser have worked both games of this series, and setup man Tyler Wells went on the injured list this week. Springs' 5.93 ERA is the number the market is charging for, but his 4.86 xERA and 4.76 road ERA say that number is fragile. That is context for the price, not a forecast, and it is why -260 and -1.5 at -118 both look like overpays to me.

The argument against me is obvious. Springs has allowed 33 home runs in 135 innings and a .912 OPS to left-handed bats, and he has given up four or more runs in 13 of 27 starts. Tampa Bay sends four lefties and a switch-hitter at him plus Caminero and his 41 homers, in a lineup that has scored 5.3 runs a game over its last ten. If that version of Springs shows up, the Rays win big and this ticket is dead by the fourth inning. I am taking the plus-1.5 anyway because it does not need Springs to pitch well. It needs Oakland's pen to do what it has done for a month and Rasmussen's game to look like Rasmussen's games usually look. That is a near-coin-flip run line where I like my side of the coin, at plus money.

    Ryan Vilade
    H+R+RBI under 1.5

    -134 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Tampa Bay Rays

I’m taking Ryan Vilade under 1.5 hits, runs and RBIs at -134. He has stayed under this number in 11 of his last 15 games, and batting seventh gives him fewer opportunities than the hitters at the top of Tampa Bay’s order. He averages only 2.9 plate appearances per game, so getting to two combined contributions often requires either multiple hits or a productive hit followed by a run.

The strongest argument against the under is the matchup. Vilade owns an .835 OPS with seven homers in 137 at-bats against lefties, while Jeffrey Springs has allowed right-handed hitters an .828 OPS and has a 5.93 ERA. Vilade also drove in a run Wednesday. Springs can absolutely create a crooked inning, but Vilade’s limited role and 11 unders in 15 games make -134 worth laying.

  • THE LONG SHOT
    JONATHAN ARANDAHR OVER 0.5
    MLBTampa Bay Rays· +560

    Jonathan Aranda
    HR over 0.5

    +560 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Tampa Bay Rays

I’m taking Jonathan Aranda over 0.5 home runs at +560. He has four homers in his last 15 games and 21 for the season, while Jeffrey Springs has surrendered 33 home runs in 135 innings. The unusual part of Springs’ profile is that left-handed hitters have done substantial damage: a .912 OPS with 10 homers in 157 at-bats. His four-seamer has allowed a .368 expected wOBA, and the secondary pitches behind his changeup have not consistently protected it. At this price, that combination gives Aranda enough of a path despite the left-on-left matchup.

That same-handed matchup is the strongest contrary evidence. Aranda has only three homers in 152 at-bats against lefties with a .655 OPS, far below his production against right-handers. This is a price-driven long shot, not my expectation for the most likely outcome, but +560 adequately pays for the platoon risk.
