The read

Atlanta and Chicago are back under the lights at Wrigley for the middle game of the series. I’m backing the Cubs at -136, with their lineup’s production against left-handed pitching carrying the decision. Chicago’s first, second and fourth hitters have posted respective OPS marks of .926, .978 and .955 against lefties. That matters against an Atlanta starter who has issued 13 walks over his last five starts, with a 1.66 WHIP during that stretch. This batting order has demonstrated production against tonight’s handedness, and the opposing starter has recently allowed considerable traffic.

Atlanta’s starter also carries a 4.76 road ERA compared with 1.80 at home. Those results don’t establish that changing parks causes his struggles, but they make his 3.08 overall ERA less convincing as the defining number for tonight. Chicago’s starter contributes another piece of the case: 33 strikeouts against 8 walks over his last five starts. His run prevention has been inconsistent, but that strikeout-and-walk balance gives me something tangible to trust alongside the offense. My read is that Chicago’s combination of hitting against lefties and better recent control can outweigh Atlanta’s advantages elsewhere.

The strongest objection is Atlanta’s pitching beyond those recent baserunners. Its starter has held right-handed hitters to a .645 OPS, a meaningful challenge for Chicago’s predominantly right-handed order. Atlanta also has three relievers with ERAs of 2.27, 2.38 and 2.78, supporting its case in a close finish. Chicago’s starter’s 4.94 ERA over his last five starts adds real risk. I take the Cubs anyway because their specific hitting splits and the opposing starter’s recent traffic carry more weight for me in this matchup. I’m willing to pay this price for that combination, while respecting that Atlanta’s relief pitching can keep the game competitive. Cubs moneyline is the call.

    .248

Tyrone Taylor is hitting .278 versus a .248 xBA over 226 plate appearances, while his .357 wOBA stands above a .312 xwOBA. His results are ahead of the contact-quality measures entering ATL @ CHC, though the facts do not establish a move tonight.

    MARTIN PEREZPITCHER WALKS OVER 1.5
    MLBAtlanta Braves· -146

    Martin Perez
    Pitcher Walks over 1.5

    -146 · CASHED · ACTUAL 4

    Atlanta Braves

Perez has cleared this walks number in seven of his last eight starts, running 2, 4, 2, 3, 2, 3, 1, and 2 free passes across that stretch, and his season rate of 2.3 walks a start over 24 outings tells me that's the rule, not the exception. He's on his regular four days of rest tonight with nothing suggesting any kind of pitch restriction or abbreviated look.

What sells me on it further is who's waiting for him. Chicago runs one of the more patient lineups in the league right now — Michael Busch has worked 84 walks this season, Pete Crow-Armstrong 77, Seiya Suzuki 77, Alex Bregman 72 — and as a club they're drawing 4.21 walks a game. Perez has to throw strikes to survive, and a lineup built to grind at-bats and spit on borderline pitches is exactly the kind of test that's produced these walk totals all year. I'll take the number again tonight.

    MIGUEL AMAYAH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
    MLBChicago Cubs· -138

    Miguel Amaya
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -138 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Chicago Cubs

Amaya gets the start behind the plate tonight against a left-hander, and he's been productive lately — 4 for his last 13 with an .855 OPS over his last 15 days, and in his last time on the field, on the 13th, he had a single and a home run. This is a combined prop, so he doesn't need a hit specifically to get there — a run scored or a knocked-in run works too — and his season totals of 35 runs and 25 RBI to go with a .728 OPS give him more than one path to it.

The wrinkle is that Perez has actually been tougher on right-handed hitters this season, holding them to a .645 OPS compared to .714 against lefties, and Amaya bats from the right side. But he's swinging a hot bat right now with pop to spare — six home runs already in limited at-bats — and I like his chances to produce at least one of hit, run, or RBI here.

  • THE LONG SHOT
    MATT OLSONHR OVER 0.5
    MLBAtlanta Braves· +352

    Matt Olson
    HR over 0.5

    +352 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Atlanta Braves

Olson is buried in an ugly September — a .122 average with one homer in 41 at-bats this month — but I'm not walking away from a hitter sitting on 39 home runs this season, the most of anyone on this board tonight, just because the average has dried up. Power hitters in a slump are still one swing away from breaking out, and Olson carries a track record against Gausman that stands out even in a small sample: three home runs in nineteen career at-bats against him.

He's done it against right-handed pitching all year, too — 24 homers in 337 at-bats — and Gausman has already allowed 24 home runs of his own this season. The month has been rough, but the season-long power and the specific history against tonight's starter are enough for me to take this price.
