The read
Under the lights at Target Field, the Yankees and Twins open their series with New York priced at -134. I’m taking the Yankees moneyline, with tonight’s lineup matchup carrying the most weight. New York starts six left-handed hitters against a Minnesota starter who has allowed an .840 OPS to lefties versus .754 to righties. He has also surrendered 16 home runs in 71.2 innings. That combination gives the Yankees a concrete offensive opening. The season ERA alone would be a thin reason to pay for a road favorite; tonight’s confirmed batting order makes the vulnerability more relevant.
The recent starting-pitcher results strengthen that read. New York’s starter allowed 11 earned runs over his last five starts, compared with 17 for Minnesota’s, while also covering more innings. That supports the matchup advantage without assuming either pitcher repeats his recent results tonight. Beyond the starters, New York’s closer carries a 2.66 ERA and 1.03 WHIP against Minnesota’s closer at 3.92 and 1.39. His appearances on September 11 and 13 remain part of the workload calculation, but his demonstrated run prevention gives New York another way to finish the job if the offense establishes a lead.
The strongest argument against this bet is that New York’s starter is vulnerable himself: his 1.36 WHIP is higher than Minnesota’s starter’s 1.30, and his night-game ERA is 5.54. Minnesota can also present six hitters batting from the left side when its switch hitters are included, and its principal late-inning relievers sat out yesterday. Those are credible ingredients for an upset. I still take New York because Minnesota’s starter has shown the larger platoon weakness, the recent starting-pitcher comparison favors the Yankees, and the closer matchup adds support. At -134, that combination is enough for a measured moneyline position.

Props on this game
3- GARY'S PICKWILL WARRENK'S OVER 4.5
Will Warren gets a strikeout number that undersells what he's doing right now. He struck out eight in his last start and seven in the one before that, and his season rate of 5.2 per start sits well clear of this 4.5 line. The out pitches are doing real work: his changeup is drawing a 66 percent chase rate and his sweeper is missing bats at nearly a quarter clip. Both are weapons he can lean on tonight.
Minnesota gives him plenty to work with. Brooks Lee, Kody Clemens and Josh Bell have all struck out well over 100 times this year, and Ryan Kreidler and rookie Walker Jenkins are both whiffing at close to a strikeout every three trips. That's a lineup built for swings and misses, not one that grinds out at-bats and shortens his night.
The caution is that Warren has had outings this year with as few as three strikeouts, so there's a floor scenario if his command is off early. But between the recent form, the bat-missing arsenal, and a Twins order that strikes out at this rate, I like the over at plus money.
- GARY'S PICKBEN RICEWALKS UNDER 0.5
Ben Rice has drawn a walk in only four of his last fifteen games, and I think that trend holds again tonight. He's locked into an aggressive, productive swing right now, a .967 OPS in September, and hitters running hot tend to expand the zone and put the ball in play rather than work deep counts.
The pitcher matchup reinforces it. Dean Kremer is walking almost two batters a start this season, but Minnesota's bullpen has been run into the ground the last three games, with Taylor Rogers, Travis Adams and Tommy Nance all already used again as recently as last night. Kremer has every incentive to pound the strike zone and save his relievers rather than nibble carefully and risk a long, walk-filled outing. That works against Rice drawing a free pass specifically, even against a pitcher without great command overall.
Rice is disciplined enough over a full season that a walk is always in play, which is the real risk here. But the recent pattern and tonight's incentive for Kremer to challenge hitters both point to the under.
- THE LONG SHOTBEN RICEHR OVER 0.5
Ben Rice is the Yankees' home run leader at 38, and he just hit number 38 last night. His numbers against right-handers are the reason I want another shot at him here: a .923 OPS against right-handed pitching, with 27 of those 38 homers coming against that side, and he's carrying a .967 OPS in September specifically.
Dean Kremer is the kind of right-hander that profile should feast on. He's allowed 16 home runs in just 14 starts this season, and left-handed hitters have done the most damage against him, a .840 OPS with 10 of those 16 homers coming from the left side in a relatively small sample of at-bats. Rice fits that description exactly.
At plus-370, I don't need this to be a coin flip to like the price. Rice is the best raw power threat in this lineup facing the pitcher on the mound most likely to give one up.
