The read
Baltimore visits Citi Field for the series opener, with New York a modest home favorite. I’m taking Mets ML -122, driven by their offense and the recent vulnerability of Baltimore’s starter. New York has repeatedly scored in double figures during its recent stretch; Baltimore arrives after 3-7 and 1-8 losses in Toronto. Those results establish the recent scoring contrast, although tonight brings different pitching. The more specific concern for Baltimore is its starter’s 5.33 ERA over his last five outings, despite a 3.71 season mark. That recent trouble gives me a reason to question how much protection his season numbers offer tonight.
The confirmed lineup strengthens New York’s case. The Mets’ leadoff hitter owns an .824 OPS against right-handers, and their second hitter is at 1.013. Baltimore’s starter has held left-handed batters to a .708 OPS, so the lineup’s handedness alone does not establish an advantage. I give more weight to those hitters’ measured production against right-handed pitching alongside the opposing starter’s recent struggles. Across the matchup, Baltimore’s fourth and sixth hitters have .541 and .613 OPS marks against right-handers. Those are relevant weaknesses in this particular batting order, even though neither split determines an individual plate appearance.
The strongest argument against this pick is Baltimore’s pitching depth. Its starter has a much larger season workload, and its principal late-inning options offer a credible path to protecting a lead. New York’s starter carries a 4.80 ERA over just 15.0 innings, and his short recent appearances make the bullpen a substantial part of the assignment. I cannot dismiss that exposure. I’m backing the Mets because their offensive matchup gives me more confidence in their ability to create scoring opportunities tonight. That outweighs Baltimore’s pitching case narrowly enough to accept -122, with modest conviction rather than a claim of a commanding edge.

Props on this game
3- GARY'S PICKBRANDON YOUNGPITCHER HITS ALLOWED OVER 4.5
Young has allowed at least five hits in seven of his last eight starts, and his season rate of 5.6 hits per outing sits well clear of this number regardless of how his ERA reads. The trend is getting worse, not better: 17.1 innings and 10 earned runs across his last three turns, a stretch where his four-seamer has been hit progressively harder, its expected damage jumping to .518 last time out even as he's missing a few more bats.
His sinker remains a problem all year, hitters running a .337 average against it, and Citi Field doesn't fix a location issue — it just turns some of that contact into singles and doubles instead of homers. This Mets lineup put up six home runs two nights ago and has scored better than seven runs a game across its last ten games, and it doesn't need loud contact to clear 4.5 hits against a starter who's given up five-plus in the clear majority of his outings.
I like the over here.
- GARY'S PICKDYLAN BEAVERSWALKS UNDER 0.5
Beavers just doesn't walk. He's taken a free pass in three of his last fifteen games, and the season log backs that up — thirty walks across ninety-two games against eighty-three strikeouts, the profile of an aggressive, see-it-hit-it hitter at the top of Baltimore's order.
Manager Craig Albernaz has talked all series about this club's aggressive, early-count approach, and Beavers is the clearest example of it in the lineup. Jonah Tong is making just his second start back in the rotation with no history against Beavers to speak of, so there's nothing about this specific matchup that should change a season-long pattern.
This is a bet on identity, not matchup, and the twelve-of-fifteen track record under this same number is about as stable a trend as this board offers.
- THE LONG SHOTFRANCISCO LINDORHR OVER 0.5
Lindor is the hottest bat on either side right now. He's homered in six of his last fifteen games and hit seven over his last fifteen days, a stretch that dwarfs what a plus-450 price requires.
The damage skews hard to the matchup he gets tonight — an .824 OPS and fifteen of his twenty home runs this year have come against right-handers, and Brandon Young throws right-handed. Young has already allowed 20 home runs in 25 starts, and the more specific worry is his fastball: the expected damage against it has climbed start over start, sitting at .518 in his last outing.
Citi Field will knock down some fly balls, but Lindor's pull-side power travels, and he's opening a homestand after six days away with as much life in his bat as he's shown all season. It's a longshot by design, but the recent rate clears the number by a wide margin.
