The read
Under the lights at Wrigley, Atlanta and Chicago open a series with postseason positioning on the line. I’m taking Braves ML +116, with Atlanta’s lineup against Chicago’s left-handed starter carrying the decision. The Braves have five right-handed hitters plus a switch-hitter in the confirmed order, and Chicago’s starter has allowed righties a .298 average and .809 OPS. His last five starts also included 15 walks and 32 hits allowed in 24 innings. Those results describe repeated opportunities for opposing offenses, and tonight’s lineup gives Atlanta a credible way to capitalize. That specific matchup makes the underdog price attractive to me.
Atlanta’s starter supplied five innings, three hits, one earned run, five strikeouts and two walks in his latest outing. That supports a competitive-start scenario, although his 5.84 ERA over the last five starts keeps my expectations measured. Atlanta also has listed relief options with season ERAs of 2.27, 2.38 and 2.78, giving the Braves a plausible way to protect an advantage. Their listed closer last pitched September 11. The appeal is the combination: opportunities against Chicago’s starter, an encouraging latest Atlanta outing, and some effective relief options behind it.
The strongest argument against Atlanta is Chicago’s offense: a .770 OPS and 5.3 runs per game against Atlanta’s .721 OPS and 4.6 runs per game. That is a meaningful advantage, especially because two Atlanta relievers threw 71 and 34 pitches Sunday. An early exit by the Braves’ starter could expose precisely the part of their pitching staff most affected by that workload. I’m taking Atlanta anyway because Chicago’s offensive advantage does not erase the traffic its own starter has been allowing or tonight’s lineup fit against him. At +116, that combination earns my backing, with Chicago’s hitting keeping the conviction modest.

3- GARY'S PICKDAVID PETERSONPITCHER WALKS OVER 1.5
Peterson's command has been the story of his season, and I'm going back to it again tonight. He's gone over 1.5 walks in seven of his last eight starts, and tonight's matchup doesn't change the picture.
Atlanta's lineup sends out five right-handed bats, and righties have hit .298 with an .809 OPS against him this season compared to .239 and .683 from the left side, so this is a lineup built against his weaker platoon split. His control trouble is also more pronounced at home than on the road, a 6.93 ERA in ten Wrigley starts against a 4.50 mark away from it, which tells me the free passes tend to add up right here.
Five days of rest hasn't fixed his command before. I like the walks over again at -155.
- GARY'S PICKMICHAEL CONFORTOH+R+RBI UNDER 1.5
Conforto is working from a part-time role in this lineup, averaging under three plate appearances a game, and he's gone quiet lately - one hit in his last nine at-bats over this Pittsburgh series, with a lone RBI to show for it. Tonight he draws a right-hander in López, and that's his tougher side: a .788 OPS against right-handed pitching this season compared to elite but tiny-sample numbers against lefties. Limited playing time, a matchup that doesn't favor him, and a cold stretch at the plate all point the same direction. I'll take the under at -142.
- THE LONG SHOTALEX BREGMANHR OVER 0.5
Bregman took a home run off Curtis just three games ago and has stayed locked in since, hitting .351 with better than a 1.000 OPS this month. That follows an August where he hit twelve home runs in a single month, the kind of stretch that shows the bat speed and swing are fully online right now.
His season numbers against right-handers back it up too, eighteen home runs in 441 at-bats from that side, and López is a right-hander who has already allowed nine home runs in twelve starts this year. His personal history against López is thin and unremarkable, so I'm not leaning on it either way.
At plus-540 I only need this to land a little more than once in seven tries to be worth it, and the pace he's on this month clears that bar. I'll take the long shot.
