The read
Sunday afternoon at Wrigley, with Chicago chasing a sweep and Pittsburgh trying to salvage the finale. I’m taking Pittsburgh at +132 because today’s starting-pitching matchup gives the underdog a credible opening. Chicago’s starter allowed 18 earned runs in 29.2 innings across his last five starts; Pittsburgh’s allowed 12 in 25.2. Pittsburgh also brings the higher season strikeout rate, 8.2 K/9 against 7.1. Those results don’t determine today’s performance, but they make me question how much separation Chicago deserves at this price. My read is that Pittsburgh can compete on the mound well enough to win this game outright.
The bullpen gives that route some support. Pittsburgh has a reliever carrying a 2.77 ERA and 1.04 WHIP whose last reported appearance was September 10, when he threw 14 pitches. That gives Pittsburgh another option for important outs after its closer threw 31 pitches Saturday. The closer’s workload remains a concern, and Chicago’s Saturday relief appearances involved 18, 21 and six pitches. I’m weighing that advantage for Chicago against Pittsburgh’s alternative. The reported wind in from left field could also temper fly-ball carry for both offenses, although I’m giving that only supporting weight.
The strongest argument against Pittsburgh is Chicago’s offense meeting a starter who issues walks. The Cubs have scored 5.0 runs per game over their last ten against Pittsburgh’s 3.2, and their lineup includes five spots capable of batting left-handed against a pitcher allowing a .761 OPS to lefties versus .581 to righties. His 71 walks in 142.0 innings are the clearest danger to this bet. I’m accepting that risk because Chicago’s own starter has been vulnerable recently, and Pittsburgh has a plausible relief plan if it gets ahead. At +132, that combination is enough for me to back the Pirates.

Props on this game
3- GARY'S PICKONEIL CRUZTOTAL BASES OVER 0.5
Cruz clears this number two ways, with contact or with power, and both are working right now. He's over this line in ten of his last fifteen games, and he's hitting .340 across his last fifteen days with real thump behind it — 18 home runs and a .479 slug on the season.
The one caution is that today's a same-side matchup, and Boyd has actually been tough on left-handed hitters overall this year. But Cruz himself has hit lefties for a better average than righties this season, .312 to .253, and the bigger factor for me is the building: Boyd's ERA at Wrigley is 5.40 over nine home starts this year, more than two runs higher than his road mark, and this is a home start for him.
Cruz also carries a heavy workload in this lineup, batting second with close to four and a half plate appearances a game, which gives this more looks than most props on the board. I like paying -155 for one total base out of a power bat against a pitcher who's been considerably worse at home.
- GARY'S PICKBUBBA CHANDLERPITCHER EARNED RUNS OVER 1.5
Chandler is sitting on a 4.25 ERA and he's gone over this number in six of his last eight starts, so the recent trend already leans the right way. What pushes me over the top is who he's facing.
This Cubs lineup has already beaten him up twice this season for a 6.10 ERA, and it just finished hanging 12 runs and then 4 runs on the rest of this Pittsburgh staff the past two days, so they're clearly seeing the ball well right now. Chandler also has a real platoon issue — left-handed and switch hitters have taken him for a .761 OPS and 11 home runs this year — and Chicago is trotting out five bats tonight that can hit from that side, including Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman, both red hot over the last two weeks.
I only need two earned runs across whatever he gives them, which is basically his season rate against a lineup that's shown it can get to him. That's a price I'll lay.
- THE LONG SHOTPETE CROW-ARMSTRONGHR OVER 0.5
Crow-Armstrong is having an MVP-caliber year and the power has spiked hard lately — eight home runs in his last fifteen days alone, an absurd rate for anybody. The matchup sets up well too: 30 of his 41 home runs this season have come against right-handed pitching, with a .946 OPS in that split, and Chandler is a right-hander who lives off a mid-to-upper-90s four-seamer he has to throw in the zone.
Chandler has allowed 13 home runs across 27 starts this year, an ordinary rate, but ordinary is enough against a hitter squaring the ball up like this right now. The wind blowing in tonight takes a little off the top, but for a lefty who mostly pulls the ball to his power side, I don't think it changes much.
At plus-500 for a hitter this hot in a favorable platoon spot, I like the number more than the market price suggests I should.
