The read

I expect Cleveland to win this one, and it comes down to lineup depth more than the two starters.

Look at the nine Baltimore is sending out. Henderson is out with the foot, Alexander went on the injured list this morning, and Basallo sits against the lefty. That leaves Narvaez and his .472 OPS behind the plate, Jeremiah Jackson recalled from Norfolk today, Hinds with 40 at-bats on the season, and Taveras at 0-for-13 over the past week filling out the bottom four. Foster Griffin gets free outs every time the order turns over. The top four is real against a lefty, and I take Mayo and his 16 homers off southpaws seriously, but that pocket has to do all the scoring for a team averaging 2.4 runs a game over its last five.

Cleveland is the deeper side tonight. Eight of the nine hit from the left side against Shane Baz, who allows a .274 average and .766 OPS to lefties with 8 of his 12 homers coming from that side. DeLauter is back in the two-hole with an .823 OPS on the year. Baz's whiff rate dropped to 13 percent in his last start and his fastball xwOBA has climbed to .500 across three outings, even though the results held against Boston. Behind Griffin, the Guardians pen carries a 1.94 ERA over the last ten days. Baz is better at home than his record says, but I expect Cleveland to scratch enough off him and hold it late.

Here is why I decline to endorse this at -116. My own stress test put the Baltimore path a little under even. Baz repeats Friday, Mayo or Alonso or Encarnacion-Strand gets one off Griffin, and Baltimore closes with Cano, who has not pitched in six days, along with Garcia and Walker. That path is live in a game I expect to be tight. Two of my key assumptions could not be checked before first pitch. Baz's fastball by start was not available, so the slide I am counting on is a trend and not a confirmed decline. Smith, Gaddis, Herrin, and Yoho all worked yesterday, and there was no report calling any of them unavailable, but that is the absence of a flag and not a manager saying they are good to go. The wind reading is also split between out to left and out to center, so I dropped it from both sides of the ledger.

Cleveland is my winner. The edge I believe in is about the size of the price, and I am not paying that for uncertainty I have not resolved. This is my game call, not a recommended wager.

The research

PLATOON EDGE

  • Coby Mayo (bats R) gets a LHP from the 3rd spot

    1.135

Coby Mayo has a 1.135 OPS against left-handers in 133 AB, compared with .513 the other way in 219 AB. He bats 3rd tonight against LHP Foster Griffin.

  • Nathaniel Lowe (bats L) draws Shane Baz (RHP), batting 6th

    .844

Nathaniel Lowe carries a .844 OPS vs RHP (305 AB) against .295 vs LHP (39 AB). He faces RHP Shane Baz tonight from the 6th spot, on his favorable platoon side by the numbers.

PARK WEATHER

  • Wind blowing out 14 mph at Oriole Park at Camden Yards tonight

    OUT 14

Wind is blowing out 14 mph to left field at Camden Yards tonight, with temps at 87° for CLE @ BAL. That combination lines up with fly balls carrying that would otherwise die, with the total set at 8.5.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Guardians are 4-2 vs Orioles this season

    4-2

The Guardians are 4-2 against the Orioles over 6 meetings this season, most recently winning 9-5. Tonight's game is CLE @ BAL.

TEAM RECORD

  • Orioles 1-7 in Shane Baz's last 8 starts

    1-7

Baltimore is 1-7 in Shane Baz's last 8 starts this season, just one win in that span. He starts tonight as Cleveland visits, with that record still attached.

    -119 · CASHED · ACTUAL 17

    Baltimore Orioles

Baz has worked at least five innings in four straight starts, and tonight he does it at home, where he's been the better pitcher all year — a 3.63 ERA at Camden against 4.18 on the road, with his last three home starts even sharper than that mark. He's already seen this Cleveland lineup once, back in April, and even while getting hit for four runs he still worked six full innings.

Six of his last eight starts have cleared this number, and the lone exception, a three-inning meltdown in Minnesota, came against a lineup that squared him up all night, nothing like what's in the box tonight. Cleveland doesn't hit for power, under a homer a game as a team, so even a rough patch for Baz tends to bleed runs in singles rather than end his night in a hurry.

I like him to get through 5.2 again.

    Baltimore Orioles

Mayo has hit sixteen of his twenty-one home runs this season against left-handed pitching, and Foster Griffin throws left-handed. That's about as clean a platoon matchup as this board offers.

He's running hot besides, four homers over his last fifteen days, and he put together a two-homer night just two games ago in this very series. Griffin's fastball got hit hard his last time out, an xwOBA near .385 on that pitch after sitting near .130 the start before it.

Mayo swinging right-handed into that history, in a park that won't punish him for pulling one, is exactly the kind of matchup that ends up in the seats.

    MLBBaltimore Orioles· -166

    Shane Baz
    Pitcher Walks over 1.5

    -166 · LOST · ACTUAL 1

    Baltimore Orioles

Baz is averaging two walks a start for the season and that hasn't changed lately — he's issued at least two in four of his last five turns. Cleveland's lineup grinds out at-bats from the top down.

Kwan is on base at a .371 clip, and DeLauter, back in the two-hole tonight after missing time, carries a .365 mark of his own. As a team the Guardians draw more than three and a half walks a game.

Baz still sits in the mid-90s with the fastball, but command has never been the strength of his game, and a patient order like this one tends to get the free passes it's looking for.
