The read
Washington’s available bullpen gives me more reason to back this run line than its recent relief results suggest. Beeter, Ribalta and Simpson last pitched September 1; Tolman last pitched August 31. Only Perales and Sinclair worked Friday. Tolman and Simpson offer rested left-handed length against Freeman and Rushing, whose OPS marks are lower against lefties. Their small samples leave their effectiveness uncertain, but Washington has useful choices tonight.
Cavalli gives those choices a chance to matter. His last three starts produced 16.0 innings, 2 earned runs, 26 strikeouts and 5 walks. His knuckle curve’s 39.4% whiff rate supports the strikeout results. The four-inning exit last time followed the comebacker to his calf; he subsequently completed his usual throwing routine without concern and was cleared to start. I expect a regular rotation outing.
The actual batting orders strengthen the case. Ohtani is out, and Tucker has a .657 OPS against right-handed pitching. Washington has Wood back leading off with a .978 OPS against righties. Those facts do not establish a market oversight, but alongside Cavalli’s recent pitching they make me willing to pay for Washington’s run-line protection. My judgment is that this combination gives Washington enough chances to win or lose narrowly at the quoted price.
The strongest objections are Glasnow and Freeman. Glasnow’s latest start lasted 7.0 innings with 1 earned run on 85 pitches, and Freeman returns with a .893 OPS against righties. Los Angeles also retains plausible late-inning options: Scott threw only 4 pitches Friday, and Vesia did not pitch. A Dodgers pitching advantage remains entirely compatible with Washington covering, but it puts pressure on Cavalli to keep Los Angeles from creating separation.
My central assumptions are that Cavalli lasts long enough to let Washington choose its relief matchups and that those rested relievers are available. Their dated workloads support that plan; their performance tonight remains the judgment call. The unresolved fact that could change my decision is a manager-confirmed restriction on Tolman or Simpson. Losing those left-handed options would weaken an important part of this bet.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAT CHECK
Daylen Lile: 1.257 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.257Lile’s 1.257 OPS reflects a genuine heater, even if that pace cannot last forever. With a low total-bases requirement, one firm swing can be enough against Los Angeles.
COOLING OFF
CJ Abrams: .339 OPS in Last 15 Days
.339Abrams owns the sharpest recent drop on the board, even if the shorter window still looks more like a concentrated slump than a new baseline. Against the Dodgers, I want proof of a turnaround before paying for his established form.
FIRST INNING
LAD have gone quiet in the 1st: runs in 1 of their last 10
1/10The Dodgers have scored in the first inning just once in their last 10, and Cavalli can keep that half quiet again. Washington attacking Glasnow is the more plausible route to an early run, but if he survives it, I expect a scoreless first.
BALLPARK
In 3 games at Dodger Stadium, Tyler Glasnow pitches to a 4.08 ERA
4.08Glasnow’s 4.08 ERA in three Dodger Stadium starts looks worse than he has pitched, especially with hitters still carrying a low average against him there. I expect him to control traffic against Washington and avoid the concentrated damage that inflated that number.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Dodgers are 4-0 vs Nationals this season
4-0Los Angeles is 4-0 against Washington, but four prior games do not decide how tonight’s pitching matchup plays. I’m not paying extra for the sweep alone.
TEAM RECORD
Nationals 7-1 in Cade Cavalli's last 8 starts
7-1Washington has won seven of Cavalli’s last eight starts, so I’m not dismissing the Nationals just because the game is at Dodger Stadium. There is real underdog appeal here.

3- GARY'S PICKTYLER GLASNOWK'S UNDER 7.5
I'm taking under 7.5 strikeouts. Glasnow recorded six and seven in his two starts since returning, staying below this number both times despite completing five and seven innings. He has gone under in five of his last eight starts overall.
Washington's lineup carries a 23% strikeout rate, which supports a good outing without making eight strikeouts the most likely result. Glasnow's breaking pitches are the danger, but this price is still playable because he needs his highest strikeout total since returning to beat me.
- GARY'S PICKBRADY HOUSEH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
One hit, run or RBI clears this, and House has contributed in at least one of those categories in 10 of his last 15 games. He enters after collecting two hits and scoring Friday, giving him six hits in his last 15 at-bats.
Glasnow is a difficult matchup, and House's season numbers against right-handed pitching are the clear concern. Batting fifth still gives him multiple paths to cash: reach safely himself, score behind the middle of the order or drive in one of Washington's first four hitters.
- THE LONG SHOTMOOKIE BETTSHR OVER 0.5
Betts is my long-shot swing at +650. He has 13 home runs against right-handed pitching and has homered twice over his last 15 games. He also enters with seven hits in his last seven games and collected two more Friday.
Cavalli has been excellent, but his recent scoring damage has been unusually concentrated in the air: seven of the last eight scoring plays against him came on home runs. His four-seam and sinker have allowed much better contact than his breaking pitches, giving Betts a specific path if he gets a fastball in the zone. Cavalli's strong work against right-handed hitters keeps this strictly a price-driven long shot.
