The read

Milwaukee’s bullpen advantage is real, but I think -162 overstates its edge with Dustin May starting tonight. May allowed 7 earned runs in 2.0 innings against Seattle and 4 in 4.1 against Texas. The one-pitch exit between those outings came on a comebacker, so I’m treating that separately. The concern is the damage in the outings where he actually had to work through a lineup.

Cincinnati has hitters positioned to challenge him. JJ Bleday owns an .807 OPS against right-handers, while Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart are batting .385 and .327 over the last 15 days. Tyler Stephenson has hit .375 against sinkers across 83 plate appearances, giving him a specific opportunity against part of May’s repertoire. Those facts support my expectation that Cincinnati can pressure May again; the recent hitting stretches alone would not carry this bet.

Yesterday’s relief assignments also matter. Chad Patrick threw 41 pitches and has not worked the following day after any of his 17 appearances of at least 25 pitches. I’m discounting another extended appearance from him. Cincinnati’s Brock Burke last pitched September 1, and Emilio Pagán last pitched September 2. That gives the Reds a plausible route to protect a lead without repeating yesterday’s relief sequence. Milwaukee still has Uribe and Romero as alternatives, so this is a specific limitation on its options, rather than a claim that its bullpen is exhausted.

The central assumption is that Andrew Abbott supplies a competitive start long enough for Burke and Pagán to matter. His latest home outing produced 6.1 innings with 2 earned runs, but Chourio and Vaughn’s strong results against left-handers—and their success against four-seam fastballs—make that assumption vulnerable. I’m accepting that risk at Cincinnati’s plus price because May’s recent problems and Patrick’s workload narrow the advantage I’m willing to assign Milwaukee.

A confirmed restriction on Burke or Pagán would make me reassess this bet. Their expected availability is part of the decision; their recent usage supports that expectation without guaranteeing it.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

STARTER FORM

  • Andrew Abbott: 7.63 ERA over his last 3 starts

    7.63

Abbott’s 7.63 ERA over his last three starts reflects growing traffic and too many runners scoring. Milwaukee gets him while his innings are opening up instead of settling down.

HEAT CHECK

  • Hector Rodriguez: 1.123 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.123

Rodriguez’s 1.123 OPS has enough volume to count as genuine short-term form, but not a permanent transformation. Needing two bases makes tonight’s matchup less forgiving than the streak suggests.

COOLING OFF

  • Brice Turang: .443 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .443

Turang’s .443 OPS has lasted long enough to signal a real timing issue. Cincinnati offers a reset spot, but any bet has to price the hitter he is today rather than his better season form.

FIRST INNING

  • YRFI watch: first innings have been live on both sides of MIL @ CIN

    YRFI

I expect immediate traffic in Milwaukee-Cincinnati and a strong chance one side converts before the second inning. The YRFI is live, with an early run capable of putting both starters into stressful innings from the jump.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Brewers are 9-3 vs Reds this season

    9-3

Milwaukee’s 9-3 record against Cincinnati is useful context, but it does not identify a repeatable edge for tonight. I need more than the season series to back the Brewers.

REGRESSION

  • Andrew Vaughn: .313 AVG vs .269 xBA

    .269

Vaughn’s .313 average has run ahead of the contact supporting it. Even in a favorable hitting park, I’m selling the hot results and leaning under in his hit market.

CUT LIST

  • Andrew Abbott

    5.02 xERA

Starts tonight for CIN — 5.02 xERA behind a 4.49 ERA — the ERA is flattering him.

    MLBCincinnati Reds· -178

    Andrew Abbott
    Pitcher Walks over 1.5

    -178 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Cincinnati Reds

Abbott has issued at least two walks in eight consecutive starts, and his season rate is 70 walks in 148.1 innings. Milwaukee's lineup collectively walks in roughly 10% of its plate appearances, so there are enough patient at-bats here to keep pressure on his command.

The price is heavy, but I only need two. Abbott has reached at least 88 pitches in seven of his last eight starts, giving him enough time to get there even if he does not pitch deep into the game.

  • GARY'S PICK
    ANDREW ABBOTTPITCHER OUTS OVER 14.5
    MLBCincinnati Reds· -150

    Andrew Abbott
    Pitcher Outs over 14.5

    -150 · LOST · ACTUAL 12

    Cincinnati Reds

This is a bet on Abbott recording five innings, not shutting Milwaukee down. He has cleared 14.5 outs in six of his last eight starts and averages 15.9 outs across 28 starts this season. He is also working on six days of rest.

Milwaukee's right-handed bats and Abbott's recent 7.63 ERA create real early-hook risk, but Cincinnati used five relievers last night. That gives the Reds an incentive to let Abbott work through manageable damage, and he has regularly approached 90 to 100 pitches.

  • THE LONG SHOT
    TYLER STEPHENSONHR OVER 0.5
    MLBCincinnati Reds· +650

    Tyler Stephenson
    HR over 0.5

    +650 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Cincinnati Reds

Stephenson has hit 13 of his 14 home runs against right-handed pitching, owns a .784 OPS in that split and has gone deep twice in his last seven games. The pitch matchup gives him a path: May's sinker has generated only a 17.6% whiff rate with a .350 expected weighted on-base average allowed.

Stephenson bats fifth, so he should get chances with traffic ahead of him. In an 88-degree, home-run-friendly park with the wind moving out, +650 is enough for me to take the long shot.
