The read
Kikuchi allowed two homers to right-handed hitters in each of his August starts. Pittsburgh’s confirmed order puts six right-handed hitters and two switch hitters against him, with Valdez the clearest threat: nine homers and a 1.067 OPS against lefties in 84 at-bats. Reynolds has an .810 OPS against lefties, and Cruz has an .848. That particular matchup is why I think Pittsburgh can generate the separation this ticket requires.
Ashcraft’s assignment strengthens the case. He has allowed four earned runs over his last 19 innings, and his .578 OPS allowed to right-handed hitters fits an Angels order containing five of them, including Neto, Trout and Grissom. Further down the lineup, Christian Moore has a .540 OPS against righties and Denzer Guzman a .593. I expect Pittsburgh to have the better opportunity to build offense through its order tonight.
The bullpen assumption matters. Montgomery worked Thursday and Friday, including 21 pitches yesterday, while Dotel threw 34 yesterday. My expected route through the late innings uses other arms: Weaver last threw 13 pitches Thursday, Soto seven Tuesday, and Mlodzinski 30 Wednesday. Those workloads support that plan; they do not confirm tonight’s assignments.
There is a credible way this bet loses. Kikuchi completed seven innings with two earned runs last time, Valdez is only 6-for-30 over the last 15 days, and Flores is 4-for-42 over that window. Pittsburgh’s favorable matchup could still produce uneven offense. The Angels also have alternatives to their recent bullpen trouble: Joyce and Watson last worked Wednesday. PNC’s pitcher-friendly setting adds to the risk that Pittsburgh struggles to create enough margin.
At +125, I give the specific matchup against Kikuchi and Ashcraft’s opposing lineup enough weight to back Pittsburgh. The judgment call is that Kikuchi’s recent homer exposure carries into tonight more meaningfully than his improved latest run total. I’m also assuming Ashcraft supplies enough innings to reach the relief options above. A pregame restriction on Weaver or Soto would make me reassess, because it would weaken the late-inning plan this wager depends on.
