White Sox at Astros

The roof is shut at Daikin Park, and tonight’s hinge is Houston asking Ronel Blanco to stabilize the game in his first major-league start in 24 days. Chicago does not need to dominate this matchup; at this price, it only needs the more dependable nine-inning path.

Blanco carries a 7.71 ERA and 1.46 WHIP through 23⅓ innings. His last three starts produced 11 earned runs and eight walks in 14⅔ innings, and his four starts lasted 4⅔, 5⅓, 4⅔ and 4⅔ innings. He was recalled after recording a 7.90 ERA over 13⅔ Triple-A innings. Chicago starts five left-handed hitters plus switch-hitting Drew Romo, while lefties have batted .286 with a .992 OPS and four home runs in 56 at-bats against Blanco. In July, the White Sox scored five earned runs with two homers against him in 5⅓ innings.

Sean Burke is not without risk. He has a 6.75 ERA with 11 walks across his last three starts, including eight walks in his latest outing. That volatility is why I prefer the moneyline to Chicago -1.5. But Burke’s broader foundation remains considerably stronger: a 3.32 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 161 strikeouts against 50 walks over 149 innings, plus a 3.04 road ERA and five days’ rest. He has held left-handed hitters to a .695 OPS and right-handed hitters to .646; Houston starts three lefties and six righties.

Houston’s bullpen owns the better full-season ERA, 3.29 to Chicago’s 3.42, and a rested Josh Hader is a serious counterweight. The immediate form and usage favor the White Sox, however: Chicago’s bullpen has a 2.10 ERA over the last seven days compared with Houston’s 4.34, and no White Sox reliever worked on both of the previous two days while Bryan Abreu and Steven Okert did.

Chicago has also averaged 4.8 runs per game with a +41 run differential, compared with Houston’s 4.6 and minus-40. At -112, the stronger starting-pitcher baseline, Blanco’s matchup against Chicago’s left-handed bats and the current bullpen conditions are enough for me to take the White Sox straight up.
