The read
PNC Park sets the stage for two frontline starters, and Logan Webb is good enough to make laying 1.5 runs uncomfortable. I’m backing Pittsburgh simply to win.
The season lines are close: Webb owns a 3.72 ERA and 1.10 WHIP, while Paul Skenes is at 3.79 and 1.12. The immediate setup favors Skenes, however. He enters off six scoreless innings with three hits and no walks, carries a 2.35 ERA over his last three starts and has a 3.59 ERA at home. Webb has a 4.91 ERA over his last three and a 4.16 ERA on the road.
San Francisco is the hotter offense, scoring 5.0 runs per game over its last 10 compared with Pittsburgh’s 2.7. The larger matchup profile still favors the Pirates: Pittsburgh averages 4.8 runs per game and has a .757 OPS against right-handed pitching, while San Francisco averages 4.1 with a .734 OPS against right-handers.
The bullpen is the separator. Pittsburgh’s current relief group owns a 3.12 ERA and 1.18 WHIP, against 4.72 and 1.48 for San Francisco’s group.
