The read

The wind is blowing out at Wrigley after Friday’s 10-8 opener, so volatility is part of the scene. Even so, Chicago owns the matchup advantages I trust most, and the -198 moneyline is too expensive.

The Cubs have produced a .265 average and .799 OPS against left-handed pitching while going 24-15 against left-handed starters. Cincinnati has a .224 average and .691 OPS against righties. Chicago’s confirmed lineup also contains six right-handed hitters and one switch-hitter against Andrew Abbott.

Abbott has the lower season ERA, 4.15 to Kevin Gausman’s 4.37, but Gausman holds the stronger command profile: a 1.26 WHIP with 149 strikeouts and 41 walks, compared with Abbott’s 1.40 WHIP, 114 strikeouts and 68 walks. Gausman has a 3.77 August ERA and just completed seven scoreless innings; Abbott has a 5.40 August ERA and allowed four earned runs over six innings in his latest start.

The bullpen is the danger. Chicago’s relievers have an 11.17 ERA over the last five days, compared with Cincinnati’s 5.74. But their season figures are much closer—3.82 for the Cubs and 3.94 for the Reds—and Cincinnati used five relievers Friday, with Brock Burke and Emilio Pagán working on consecutive game days.

Beyond the pitching matchup, Chicago carries the stronger full-season foundation: a +117 run differential against Cincinnati’s -98, along with a .990 fielding percentage and 51 errors compared with the Reds’ .985 and 73. With the moneyline unavailable at a reasonable price, I’ll take Chicago’s superior lineup matchup, command advantage and overall team profile at plus money on the run line.
