The read

Friday night in Anaheim brings a sharp contrast between the season-long picture and the matchup on the mound. Philadelphia owns the better year, but Reid Detmers is the reason I’m taking the home underdog.

Detmers has allowed one earned run across his last 20 innings, with 22 strikeouts and five walks. He also owns a 3.49 ERA over 85 home innings and has been nearly identical against left-handed and right-handed hitters, holding them to .622 and .618 OPS marks. That fits well against a Philadelphia lineup with four left-handed and five right-handed batters. The Phillies have also produced a lower OPS against lefties, .697, than against righties, .723.

Andrew Painter deserves credit for improving: his last three starts produced a 4.15 ERA, capped by seven innings of one-run work. But his larger body of work still carries a 6.04 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 9.00 first-inning ERA. Left-handed hitters have produced an .843 OPS against him, while Zach Neto enters with a .996 OPS over the last 15 days at the top of the Angels’ order.

The Los Angeles bullpen is the concern after allowing eight earned runs over 13.1 innings against Cleveland. Both clubs had Thursday off, however, and Detmers has completed six, eight and six innings in his last three starts. His team being 1-5 across his last six starts keeps this at measured confidence, but at +108 I’m backing the substantial starting-pitcher advantage and taking the Angels outright.
