The read
Friday night at Camden Yards, an Orioles club trying to stop a four-game slide welcomes the division-leading Rays in a matchup neither side can treat casually. Baltimore has won eight of 12 meetings and all four at Camden Yards, while Trevor Rogers enters with six earned runs over 16 innings in his last three starts compared with Freddy Peralta’s 12 earned runs over 14⅓ innings. I respect those Baltimore advantages, but Tampa Bay at plus money is the ticket my read calls for.
The Rays have six right-handed hitters and one switch-hitter facing Rogers, who has allowed righties a .277 average and .773 OPS with 12 home runs in 361 at-bats; lefties have managed only a .177 average and .504 OPS. Tampa Bay is 23-12 against left-handed starters, whereas Baltimore is 44-45 against right-handed starters. Yandy Díaz is 21-for-57 with a 1.000 OPS over his last 15 games, and Ryan Vilade is 4-for-4 with a home run and a walk against Rogers this season. Peralta remains the risk, but his most recent look at this Baltimore lineup produced one hit and two earned runs over 4⅔ innings. He does not need to dominate for this bet—he needs to keep Tampa Bay within reach.
That is where the bullpen decides my card. Tampa Bay’s current relief group owns a 2.94 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, compared with Baltimore’s 4.17 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. The recent seven-game figures run the other way—6.11 for the Rays and 3.75 for the Orioles—so this is not an automatic late-inning edge. Still, Bryan Baker, Kevin Kelly and Tyler Wells did not pitch Thursday, and their season-long work gives Tampa Bay the relief structure I trust more in a close game. I’m taking the plus price on the outright result rather than paying -200 for the extra run and a half.

Peralta has recorded more than 15 outs in only two of his last eight starts. Even when he limited Baltimore to two earned runs five days ago, three walks and 76 pitches forced him out after 4⅔ innings. That is the path I expect again: enough traffic and extended at-bats to keep him from working deep, without requiring an Orioles offensive explosion.
Peralta carries a 1.48 WHIP and has issued 53 walks in 128 innings. Baltimore averages 3.82 walks per game, and seeing him again this quickly should help the lineup maintain a patient approach. Tampa Bay also has its best late-inning relievers rested, so there is little incentive to stretch Peralta through the sixth. I’m betting the recurring pitch-count problem rather than trying to predict how many runs score.

This matchup is built for Díaz. Trevor Rogers has held left-handed hitters to a .177 average and .504 OPS, but righties have produced a .277 average, .773 OPS and 12 home runs against him. Díaz owns an .864 OPS against left-handed pitching and is 3-for-6 in his meetings with Rogers this season.
The current contact is even more compelling. Díaz is 21-for-57 with four home runs over his last 15 games, has exceeded this number in 10 of those 15 and recently produced 13 hard-hit balls. Batting first also gives him the strongest chance on the Tampa Bay side to receive a fifth plate appearance. One extra-base hit or two singles gets us there, and I want that combination at plus money.
