The read
Friday night at Dodger Stadium, the Pirates open a nine-game trip against a Dodgers club returning home on a three-game winning streak. Yoshinobu Yamamoto faces Bubba Chandler, and while Los Angeles owns the cleaner season résumé, the run line asks a different question than simply who is better.
Yamamoto deserves every bit of respect here. His 2.60 ERA and 0.89 WHIP are substantially better than Chandler’s 4.23 and 1.37. But Chandler’s current work makes me unwilling to lay the run and a half. He has allowed four earned runs across 16.2 innings in his last three starts, while Yamamoto has allowed four across 19.2. Pittsburgh has also won four of Chandler’s last six starts. That does not erase the season-long pitching difference, but it gives the Pirates a legitimate route to competitive innings before both clubs reach their rested bullpens.
The offensive comparison is closer than the records suggest. Both teams average 5.0 runs per game, with Pittsburgh carrying a .766 OPS against right-handed pitching and Los Angeles a .773 mark. The Pirates have active production from Rafael Flores Jr., Nick Gonzales and Brandon Lowe, while the Dodgers counter with Shohei Ohtani, Andy Pages and Max Muncy in strong recent form. Los Angeles owns the better season bullpen at a 2.92 ERA and 1.09 WHIP, but Pittsburgh’s relief group has been credible at 3.44 and 1.15, and each side enters after a day off. I am not calling Pittsburgh the better club. I am saying Chandler’s recent form, comparable production against righties and a usable bullpen make the extra run valuable. At -105, Pirates +1.5 is the ticket that matches my read.
Props on this game
7Max MuncyOVER 0.5 Home Runs Home Runs+300
WActual 1
Muncy is the play I like best on this board. Three homers in his last week, four in his last fifteen games, and a season-long homer rate that ranks with anyone in this lineup regardless of which arm is on the mound.
He's 4-for-9 against Pittsburgh this year and he's barreling the ball at an absurd clip lately — nearly a third of his recent balls in play have gone for barrels. Add in that Chandler bleeds home runs to left-handed bats, and Muncy checks every box.
Plus money for a hitter this hot is where I want to be.
Shohei OhtaniOVER 0.5 Home Runs Home Runs+235

Chandler's got a real problem with left-handed power — eight homers allowed to lefties this year against just two to righties, and Ohtani's the best lefty bat on the planet stepping into that exact matchup. He's carrying three homers in his last seven games and four in his last fifteen, and he's already gone deep twice against Pittsburgh this season in a tiny sample. The price isn't a gift, but this is a hitter in rhythm walking into a pitcher who leaks the long ball to his side of the plate. I want Ohtani here.
Brandon LoweOVER 0.5 Home Runs Home Runs+450
LActual 0
Lowe hit the walk-off homer that beat Detroit two nights ago and he's been the Pirates' most dangerous bat all month — two homers in his last seven games, twenty-seven on the season. What stands out is that almost all of his power comes against right-handed pitching, and that's exactly what he's getting tonight in Yamamoto. He's quiet in the small sample against the Dodgers this year, but I'll take the season-long track record and the current form over eleven at-bats.
Oneil CruzOVER 0.5 Home Runs Home Runs+390
WActual 1
Cruz is a different kind of hitter when he connects, and his power actually plays up against right-handed pitching, where his homer rate this year is better than it is against lefties. He's only a few games back from a long layoff, so there's rust risk, but he already put one into the right-center bleachers his first week back at 107 mph off the bat, and that's not a cheap one. At this price I'll take a swing on the power profile against a right-hander tonight.
Rafael Flores Jr.OVER 0.5 Home Runs Home Runs+600
LActual 0
Nobody in this lineup is swinging a hotter bat than Flores right now — five homers in his last fifteen games, including a two-homer night against Detroit two days ago where he hit the game-tying blast in the ninth before Lowe walked it off. It's a tiny sample for the season and I'm not pretending that pace repeats, but he's locked into the everyday catching job with the other backstops hurt, and I want a small piece of a hot hand at this price.
Yoshinobu YamamotoUNDER 4.5 Pitcher Hits Allowed Pitcher Hits Allowed+105
LActual 5
Yamamoto has allowed four or fewer hits in four of his last five starts, and his 0.89 WHIP is backed by an opponent average below .200 against hitters from either side. Pittsburgh sends six left-handed or switch hitters at him, while several bats around the lineup are cold. He does not need exceptional length to cash this; another six-inning turn with four hits is enough. I will take the under at plus money.
Spencer HorwitzUNDER 0.5 Hits Hits+140

The leadoff spot gives Horwitz extra opportunities, but +140 compensates for that exposure. He is 5-for-34 over the last 15 days, is batting .128 in August and now draws Yamamoto, who has held left-handed hitters to a .180 average and .524 OPS. Los Angeles also has a strong relief group waiting behind its starter. I make the no-hit outcome more likely than this price suggests.
