The read
The roof is closed at Daikin Park, the series is tied, and the Angels and Astros step into a rubber match after trading low-scoring decisions. Houston may have the stronger starter on paper, but this ticket is about the shape of the game: I’m taking Los Angeles plus the run and a half.
Peter Lambert’s 3.11 ERA and 1.15 WHIP give Houston a clear starting-pitching advantage over Grayson Rodriguez’s 7.17 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. The matchup-specific results, however, are much tighter. Lambert has a 3.18 ERA in two starts against the Angels, while Rodriguez has a 3.48 ERA in two starts against the Astros. Rodriguez’s team lost both games, but he did enough to keep Houston from breaking either start open. The Astros are also without Jeremy Peña tonight, and their offense has averaged only 3.4 runs over its last ten games. This series has already produced a 3-1 Angels win and a 3-2 Astros win, while the teams have split six meetings at this venue.
The bullpen picture supports taking the extra run. Houston’s current relief arms own a 3.42 ERA for the season and a 3.03 ERA over the last seven games; the Angels are at 3.54 for the season and 2.18 over the last seven. Los Angeles did not use Ben Joyce Wednesday, while Houston deployed Bennett Sousa, AJ Blubaugh, Steven Okert, Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader. Houston can absolutely win behind Lambert, but the -1.5 asks it to create separation that this series, Rodriguez’s two prior outings against the Astros, and both clubs’ recent relief work do not strongly support. My money is on another competitive game, and Angels +1.5 -132 gives me the outcome my read actually calls for.

5Yordan AlvarezOVER 0.5 Home Runs Home Runs+250
LActual 0
Alvarez is running a Triple Crown pace and he's doing it specifically by mashing right-handers — .338 with 27 home runs in 328 at-bats against them this season, a homer every dozen or so trips. Rodriguez throws right-handed and leans on his four-seamer more than half the time, and that pitch has been getting hit hard all year — .308 average against it with an xwOBA north of .400.
That's a get-it-up-in-the-zone fastball walking into the best right-on-right matchup in this lineup. Alvarez has been a touch quieter the last two weeks, but the underlying contact — 94 mph average exit velocity in his last look — says the swing is fine and the results just haven't caught up yet.
I don't need much else to like this number.
Cam SmithOVER 0.5 Home Runs Home Runs+575
LActual 0
Smith has four home runs in his last fifteen games and he's carrying an OPS over 1.000 in that stretch — this bat came alive in August after a quiet middle of the summer, and he already took the Angels deep earlier in this series. He's a right-handed hitter walking into the shortest porch in the building, and Rodriguez has let right-handed hitters get to a near-.800 OPS against him this year. Hot hitter, favorable short porch, a pitcher who hasn't been able to put righties away — that's a stack of things pointing the same direction, and the price is still paying out like it's the quieter version of Smith from June.
Mike TroutOVER 0.5 Home Runs Home Runs+390
LActual 0
Trout already took Lambert deep once this season in a small sample, and the split behind it backs it up — right-handed hitters are sitting on almost a .750 OPS against Lambert this year, more than 200 points higher than what he does to lefties. Trout's owned this Astros staff all season, three home runs in 42 at-bats, a clear step up from his own already-good rate against everyone else. He's been quiet this past week, but a righty masher running into a pitcher with a real hole against righties is exactly the gap I want to bet into.
Peter LambertUNDER 2.5 Pitcher Earned Runs Pitcher Earned Runs-160
LActual 9
Lambert has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight consecutive starts, including both of his outings against the Angels this season. His workload also helps this under: he has completed six innings only twice in his last eight starts, limiting the time available for a third earned run.
Los Angeles has averaged 2.7 runs over its last 20 games and brings five left-handed hitters plus a switch-hitter into this matchup. Lambert has held lefties to a .152 average and .503 OPS, with his changeup producing a .230 xwOBA. The price is substantial, but the matchup and Lambert's consistency justify it.
Grayson RodriguezUNDER 15.5 Pitcher Outs Pitcher Outs-130
LActual 21
Rodriguez must record an out in the sixth inning to beat this number, something he has done in only two of his last eight starts. Four of his last six outings ended after exactly four or five innings, and he needed at least 80 pitches in every one of those six starts.
His 1.59 WHIP and inconsistent fastball command create the traffic and long counts that shorten outings. Houston is missing Jeremy Peña, but it still has four left-handed bats against a pitcher allowing lefties a .318 average and .940 OPS. I expect the Angels to reach for the bullpen before Rodriguez gets through 5 1/3.
