Under a partly cloudy sky and heavy summer heat at Great American Ball Park, the Baltimore Orioles look to complete a series sweep as they send Kyle Bradish to the mound against the Cincinnati Reds' left-hander Nick Lodolo.
Look, as a lifelong Reds fan, my heart always wants to back Cincinnati. I grew up with this team, and I am always optimistic about our potential, especially when we are desperate to salvage a game on our home turf in front of a loud crowd. But as a sharp gambler with over 30 years in the game, I have learned the hard way that you bet with your head, not your heart. And right now, the numbers are screaming that the market is offering a flat pick'em price of -108 on a matchup where the Baltimore Orioles hold a massive, systemic edge.
The biggest discrepancy tonight lies on the mound. While Lodolo carries a shiny 5.05 season ERA, his underlying 6.11 xERA indicates that the market is overpaying for a highly fragile number, particularly in this hitter-friendly environment where he has struggled to a 6.30 home ERA in 30 IP. Lodolo is also giving up a .358 batting average and a .926 OPS to left-handed hitters, creating a direct matchup advantage for left-handed bats like Gunnar Henderson. In contrast, Kyle Bradish is far more sustainable, carrying a 3.77 ERA (3.99 xERA) and backing it up with elite swing-and-miss tools, including a 46.7% whiff rate on his curveball. However, Adley Rutschman’s elite defense completely shifts the equation; he ranks in the 99th percentile in Fielding Run Value and has thrown out 42% of base stealers (13-of-31), which directly neutralizes Cincinnati's aggressive running game.
