Mets at Braves

It’s a sweltering July 4th holiday night at Truist Park, where a sellout crowd is packed in to watch the Atlanta Braves put their historic 19-game home winning streak on the line against their division rivals, the New York Mets. While the public is lining up to lay the heavy price on Atlanta and Chris Sale, a closer look at the underlying numbers suggests the market is overpaying for a fragile number. Sale's shiny 2.10 ERA is built on some serious fortune, with his expected ERA (xERA) sitting more than a full run higher at 3.21. Meanwhile, Sean Manaea has been the victim of bad luck, with a 4.71 ERA that underperforms his 4.07 xERA. The gap between these two lefties is far smaller than the odds indicate, and in 90-degree heat where fly balls carry, the Mets' lineup has the tools to make Sale work.

The matchup details tilt the scales even further. While the Mets are missing depth pieces, they still feature Juan Soto, who leads the NL with a .971 OPS and has a massive .487 xwOBA against four-seam fastballs—Sale’s primary pitch. Francisco Lindor also has a long history of success against Sale, batting .368 with a .964 OPS against him in 38 career at-bats. More importantly, the late-inning path for Atlanta is extremely rocky. The Braves' high-leverage bullpen arms are heavily taxed: Raisel Iglesias, Aaron Fuentes, and Dylan Dodd all pitched yesterday and have worked two of the last three days. With Robert Suarez still on the shelf, the Braves have a highly fatigued relief group. If Manaea can keep the Mets close through five, New York will have a major advantage in the later innings against a tired bullpen, especially with a fully rested Devin Williams waiting in their own corner.

The obvious counter-argument is that Sale is in peak form and the Braves have been unbeatable at home, riding a 19-game home winning streak. But streaks are built on variance, and the Braves are playing with fire tonight. They are forcing Jorge Mateo into a starting role after placing Ha-Seong Kim on the injured list today. Between the defensive shuffle, a fatigued bullpen, and Sale’s impending regression, the market is giving too much credit to the home favorites.
