The read

A sweltering July evening in Philadelphia sets the stage for a spectacular pitching duel at Citizens Bank Park as the Pirates' young phenom Paul Skenes goes head-to-head with Phillies ace Zack Wheeler.

The market is overpaying for Zack Wheeler's pristine 2.03 ERA. While Wheeler has been excellent, his 2.96 xERA indicates he is overperforming his expected metrics by nearly a full run, a fragile number that could be exposed tonight. On the flip side, the market is discounting Paul Skenes because of a bizarre team slump: the Pirates have dropped eight straight games in which Skenes has started. Yet, Skenes has been spectacular, pitching to a 3.10 ERA with a far superior 2.64 xERA, showing he's actually been the sharper pitcher on a fundamental level. Furthermore, Skenes turns into an absolute monster under the lights, boasting a microscopic 1.73 night ERA compared to his 5.87 day mark.

The strongest argument against the Pirates is their depleted lineup with key pieces on the shelf, coupled with the Phillies' explosive offense playing in a hot, humid 95-degree environment where the wind is blowing out to center field. It is a scary setting to back an underdog, especially with Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber looming. However, Skenes is uniquely equipped to neutralize this threat. He holds left-handed hitters to a meager .612 OPS, and he has historically dominated the Phillies' big bats, holding Schwarber hitless in nine career at-bats with five strikeouts, and keeping Trea Turner to an 0-for-6 mark.

While the Phillies' bullpen has a rest advantage with Jhoan Duran and Orion Kerkering, the starting pitching mismatch in expected metrics and the price tag are what define the value here. At +120, we are getting a generationally talented ace who is severely undervalued due to a lack of run support in previous starts. Skenes has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last five outings, and with Esmerlyn Valdez (.444 AVG and 1.768 OPS with runners in scoring position) providing clutch hitting, the Pirates have more than enough punch to back their ace and break his run-support curse. Grab the value on the Pirates moneyline.
