He has been in peak form throughout June, posting a 1.00 ERA across four starts, and he poses a nightmare matchup for the Diamondbacks. Rasmussen suppresses right-handed hitters to a tiny .138 AVG and a .383 OPS, which perfectly targets an Arizona lineup packed with righties and switch-hitters like Ketel Marte, Geraldo Perdomo, and Nolan Arenado. The market is rightfully demanding a heavy price on the Rays at -198, but it is entirely justified. The Diamondbacks are sending Merrill Kelly to the mound, and while he has managed to squeak out a few quality starts lately, his underlying numbers are highly vulnerable. Kelly owns a 5.71 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP, but his expected ERA sits at a league-worst 7.2. The market is overpaying for a fragile surface ERA, and against a Rays team that is 30-12 at Tropicana Field, those defensive cracks are going to show.
Tampa Bay's lineup is constructed perfectly to punish Kelly's weaknesses. Kelly has a severe platoon vulnerability, allowing a .941 OPS and 10 home runs to left-handed hitters. The Rays will roll out multiple left-handed bats, including Jonathan Aranda, while Junior Caminero enters on a tear after homering in three consecutive games. The biggest argument against the Rays is their heavily taxed bullpen, which used five relievers to secure yesterday’s win. However, with Rasmussen's ability to pitch deep into games—having reached 7.0 innings in three of his last four starts—and the Rays' offense primed to strike early and often against Kelly, the bullpen workload should not be a deciding factor. Tampa Bay is rolling, and they have won nine of their last ten matchups against Arizona. I am laying the price on the red-hot home team to complete the sweep.
