Sandy Alcantara is the quintessential workhorse for a Marlins team that desperately needs length from its starter tonight. Alcantara leads Miami with 103.1 innings pitched and has proven his stamina recently, completing at least 7.0 innings (21 outs) in three of his last four outings.
The context of the Marlins bullpen is the deciding factor; primary relievers like Calvin Faucher and Michael Petersen have worked back-to-back days with significant pitch counts, and Ryan Gusto threw 68 pitches just two days ago. Manager Clayton McCullough has almost no choice but to leave Alcantara in as long as possible.
