In the backup catcher matchup, Jhonny Pereda provides Seattle with a major defensive upgrade, carrying a superb 41.7% caught-stealing rate that will effectively freeze Arizona's speed on the basepaths.
The strongest argument against the Mariners is the classic baseball adage that completing a sweep is notoriously difficult, especially against a veteran Arizona team with a rested, elite closer in Paul Sewald waiting in the wings if the game remains tight. However, Arizona's current roster deficits make it highly unlikely they can keep this game close enough to utilize Sewald. Kelly's high contact rates and the Mariners' ability to construct a relentless left-handed gauntlet should allow Seattle to jump out to an early lead. With Miller commanding the strike zone and Seattle’s offense hitting with peak authority, the Mariners possess too many structural advantages to pass up at this price.
