Under the closed roof at Daikin Park, the Houston Astros look to bounce back and salvage the middle game of this three-game series against the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers.
While the Brewers enter tonight on a hot five-game winning streak, the starting pitching matchup and bullpen availability create a massive situational edge for the Astros at near-even money. The Brewers are starting rookie Brandon Sproat, who has been highly vulnerable to the long ball, allowing nine home runs in just 44.2 innings. In a hitter-friendly venue like Daikin Park with its short Crawford Boxes in left field, Sproat's home-run struggles and poor command (15 walks in his last 21.2 innings) represent a major liability against Houston's elite power core of Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker. Furthermore, after yesterday's 10-inning battle, Milwaukee's high-leverage bullpen arms are severely depleted. Trevor Megill and Abner Uribe have heavy recent workloads and are likely unavailable, forcing a short-lived Sproat start to rely on lower-tier relievers to protect any lead in the middle to late innings.
Conversely, the Astros' bullpen is in a much fresher state, with closer Bryan King fully rested and ready. Peter Lambert gives Houston a more stable option to eat innings, having completed at least five frames in four of his last five starts, which should allow the Astros to bridge directly to their high-leverage relief core. The strongest counterargument to backing Houston is their injury-depleted lineup, which is missing stars Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa. However, the market has overadjusted for these established absences, creating value on an Astros squad that is 7-3 in their last 10 games with a stabilized 3.1 runs allowed per game. Back the fresher, power-advantaged home side to exploit a taxed Milwaukee pitching staff.
