Twins at Guardians

The lights are bright at Progressive Field as the first-place Guardians look to extend their divisional dominance, while a frustrated Twins squad tries to patch together a rotation that is currently held together by duct tape and desperation. Tensions are already boiling over following yesterday’s controversial interference non-call, but the real story tonight is whether Minnesota's gamble on Joe Ryan’s health can withstand Cleveland's surgical approach at the plate.

The pitching matchup heavily favors the home side once you look past Tanner Bibee’s winless record. Bibee has been a different animal at Progressive Field this season, posting a stellar 1.66 ERA at home and maintaining a career-long hex over the Twins' biggest bats, holding Byron Buxton and Ryan Jeffers to a combined .111 average. On the other side, Joe Ryan is a significant injury risk; he was pulled from his last start with elbow soreness and is only pitching today because the Twins' rotation is in a total state of collapse, evidenced by Taj Bradley being placed on the 15-day IL just this morning. If Ryan’s velocity dips even slightly, he is in for a long night against a lineup that is specifically built to hurt him.

Tactically, the Guardians have the perfect storm of conditions to exploit Ryan’s flyball-heavy tendencies.
