The read

We’ve got a Wednesday night special down in Miami where the humidity is locked out and the velocity is locked in for a battle between two clubs trying to find their footing in 2026. Both the Marlins and Orioles enter tonight with 16-20 records, but while Baltimore managed to steal a high-scoring opener in the late innings yesterday, they now have to deal with the high-octane arm of Eury Pérez.

The pitching mismatch here is the dominant factor. Pérez is pumping triple-digit heat, and while his command has been a little loose post-surgery, his 9.7 K/9 provides a safety net that Brandon Young simply doesn't possess. Young enters this start with a 6.14 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP, and the Statcast data suggests he’s actually been over-performing his underlying 5.77 xERA. He doesn't miss enough bats to survive in a high-contact environment, which is exactly what Miami’s lineup brings to the table. The Marlins are starting six left-handed or switch hitters tonight, led by Liam Hicks and Xavier Edwards, who are both hitting well over .320 against righties.

Baltimore has the star power with Pete Alonso and Gunnar Henderson, but they are playing in a park that suppresses home runs and doing it with an infield defense that ranks near the bottom of the league. With both bullpens heavily fatigued after yesterday’s slugfest, the pressure is squarely on the starters to provide length. Historically, Pérez dominated this Baltimore lineup with seven scoreless innings last season, while Young was tagged for seven runs in his lone career start against Miami. I'm backing the talent gap on the mound in a closed-roof environment where that velocity should carry Miami to a win.
