Rockies at Reds

The lights are bright at Great American Ball Park as the first-place Reds look to continue their dominance over a Rockies team that is struggling to find its footing on the road. We have a fascinating matchup between two pitchers whose ERA numbers are lying to us, but the truth is likely to come out tonight under these Cincinnati clouds.

Tomoyuki Sugano is carrying a respectable 3.42 ERA, but his expected metrics suggest he's been living on borrowed time, with an xERA sitting at a terrifying 6.15. He has been dancing between raindrops all month, but tonight he is walking into a buzzsaw. With an 11-mph wind blowing straight out to center field at one of the most home-run-friendly parks in the majors, Sugano’s 1.7 HR/9 is a flashing red light. The Reds’ lineup is currently top-tier in exit velocity and barrel rate, and with Elly De La Cruz putting up historic numbers and Nathaniel Lowe crushing righties to the tune of a 1.155 OPS, Sugano is going to have a hard time keeping the ball in the yard.

On the flip side, Brandon Williamson has his own issues with command, but he catches a massive break with the Rockies’ lineup construction. Colorado is forced to rely on bats like Mickey Moniak and Hunter Goodman, who have looked completely lost against left-handed pitching this year. Even if Williamson starts handing out free passes, the Rockies’ documented struggles with runners in scoring position suggest they won’t be able to capitalize. The Reds also have a significant defensive advantage with Jose Trevino behind the plate, who is elite at framing and controlling the run game—something that will be vital against a Colorado team desperate to manufacture runs.

If this game stays close into the late innings, the advantage swings even harder toward Cincinnati. Between the wind blowing out, the massive regression looming for Sugano, and the momentum of a Reds team that has won eight of its last 10, I’m sticking with the home team to get the job done.
