The read

It’s a desert shootout at Chase Field as the White Sox and Diamondbacks settle the score in this high-powered rubber match. We’ve seen 34 runs cross the plate in just 48 hours, and with two starters on the mound who are statistically begging for a regression beatdown, don't expect the scoreboard operator to get much rest today.

Both Michael Soroka and Davis Martin are walking a statistical tightrope. Soroka’s 2.78 ERA looks like an ace, but his 4.93 xERA tells you he’s been playing with fire; Martin is even more extreme, overperforming his underlying data by more than two-and-a-half runs. The difference is the "how." Soroka misses bats at a dominant clip of 11.1 per nine, whereas Martin is a contact-manager who relies on a Chicago defense that has been leaky all season. In a park like Chase Field that rewards fly balls, I’m putting my money on the guy who can get the punch-out when the bases are loaded over the guy who needs his infield to be perfect to survive.

The real separation happens on the basepaths and in the ninth inning. White Sox catcher Reese McGuire hasn’t caught a single base-stealer this season (0-for-14), which is like leaving the vault open for a guy like Corbin Carroll. Arizona is going to manufacture runs by taking the extra bag and exploiting Chicago's 28th-ranked bullpen, while the Sox are forced to rely on Munetaka Murakami’s historic—but volatile—power surge to stay competitive. If this game is close late, the gap between Paul Sewald (0.64 WHIP) and a struggling Seranthony Domínguez (5.63 ERA) is a canyon. Arizona is 8-4 at home for a reason; they have the professional late-inning insurance to survive a slugfest and secure the series.
