Rays at Pirates

We have a heavyweight clash at PNC Park this afternoon as the Pirates look to secure a series win behind their 2025 Cy Young winner, Paul Skenes, while the Rays attempt to regain their footing after seeing their six-game winning streak evaporate yesterday. The atmosphere in Pittsburgh is electric with Skenes taking the hill, and the conditions are setting up a very specific tactical advantage that the market might be slightly underestimating despite the steep price.

The surface numbers suggest Drew Rasmussen is the hotter hand with that 1.13 ERA, but the underlying Statcast data tells a different story. Rasmussen owns a 2.47 xERA, while Skenes sits at 2.43—they are essentially the same pitcher on paper right now. The difference is the trajectory. Skenes has been untouchable over his last three starts, posting a 1.56 ERA and holding hitters to a measly .105 average. Rasmussen, meanwhile, is returning from paternity leave and facing a Pirates lineup that currently ranks significantly higher in barrel rate. Most importantly, the weather is the deciding factor for me. We have 83-degree heat and a 17 mph wind blowing straight out to left field. At a pitcher-friendly park like PNC, that wind tunnel is a massive gift for Oneil Cruz and Brandon Lowe, who have the elite power to exploit it. Tampa’s lineup relies more on contact and speed—Chandler Simpson is a great story, but slap hitters don’t benefit from a 17 mph gust the way Pittsburgh’s middle-of-the-order thumpers do.

The bullpen disparity also favors the home side. Pittsburgh’s 3.16 team ERA is no fluke; they’ve built a reliable bridge to the finish line, whereas the Rays are currently juggling a depleted staff with five pitchers on the IL. Even with the Pirates using their high-leverage arms yesterday, the reliability of Skenes going deep into games gives them the edge. Skenes has gone at least six innings in his recent starts while giving up next to nothing. Against a Rays offense that managed only five hits yesterday and is struggling to generate hard contact, Skenes should dictate the pace.
