The numbers tell a story of a massive looming regression for Colorado’s starter, Tomoyuki Sugano. On the surface, his 2.16 ERA looks elite, but a quick peek under the hood shows a 4.98 xERA and a 1.26 WHIP. He’s been dancing through raindrops for three starts, allowing way too much hard contact and relying on a low strikeout rate that simply won't play against a Dodgers lineup leading the majors in home runs and OPS. His 11.0 K/9 is the ultimate equalizer in Coors Field because you can’t get BABIP’d to death if the hitters aren't putting the ball in play. The Rockies are also dealing with a fresh blow to their lineup, losing sparkplug Willi Castro to a hand injury just today. Combine that with a Dodgers bullpen that is completely refreshed after a Thursday off-day—allowing them to deploy lockdown arms like Edwin Diaz and Alex Vesia at full strength—and the path for a Rockies upset looks incredibly narrow. The price is steep at -310, but the statistical gap and the situational rest advantage make the Dodgers the only play here.
