On the other side, David Peterson hasn't exactly been lights-out, but he is significantly more reliable than his 1.97 WHIP suggests. His 4.32 xERA indicates he has been the victim of some bad luck regarding ball placement, but crucially, he hasn't allowed a single home run yet in 2026. He faces a Diamondbacks lineup that is currently in a tailspin, hitting a collective .213 as a team. Arizona just lost two of their most productive veteran bats, Carlos Santana and Jordan Lawlar, to the injured list yesterday. Without that middle-of-the-order presence, this offense lacks the consistent firepower to capitalize on the base traffic Peterson traditionally allows.
The discrepancy in late-inning relief is the final nail here. The Mets' bullpen has been the gold standard early this season with a 2.54 ERA, and they have Edwin Díaz locked and loaded after two days of rest. Arizona remains winless on the road this year (0-5) and is being forced to lean on depth players like Jose Fernandez and Jorge Barrosa to fill significant gaps in the batting order. Between the massive gap in expected pitching performance and the Mets' current four-game winning streak, the price on the home favorite is the right play. New York has all the momentum, the superior bullpen, and a starter who is much closer to his true form than the volatility we are seeing from Nelson.
