In conditions expected to drop below 37 degrees, grip and command become the primary obstacles for any pitcher, but Skubal has already demonstrated elite control in the early going. He faces a Minnesota lineup that is currently shivering at the plate with a collective .202 batting average. While Royce Lewis and Trevor Larnach have seen Skubal well in the past, asking this struggling Twins order to manufacture runs against a lefty with a zero percent walk rate in freezing weather is a tall order.

The market has Detroit as a heavy favorite for a reason, and the bullpen usage from yesterday's series opener reinforces that edge. Because the Tigers trailed throughout their 7-3 loss on Monday, manager A.J. Hinch was able to keep his high-leverage "three-headed monster" of Kenley Jansen, Kyle Finnegan, and Will Vest entirely fresh. Taj Bradley has been impressive for Minnesota with a 0.87 ERA, but his underlying metrics from last season suggest he is a prime candidate for regression, especially against a Detroit lineup that features the red-hot Colt Keith. Even with Kerry Carpenter sidelined by a fresh illness, the Tigers have the pitching depth and the rested back-end arms to navigate a low-scoring environment and even the series. I am laying the price with the better arm and the fresher bullpen.
