Assad was recently tagged for a 9.00 ERA in Triple-A before this emergency call-up, and his underlying metrics from last season are a massive red flag. His 2025 xERA (4.86) suggested he was overperforming his actual results significantly, and a patient, high-contact Rays offense led by Yandy Díaz (.415 AVG) is a difficult matchup for a pitcher struggling with his command. While the Cubs' middle infield defense is elite, they can only do so much if Assad is consistently pitching from behind in the count. Tampa has outscored opponents 17-6 over their last three games, and with the emotional lift of being back in St. Pete, they are the clear side to back here.
