Kikuchi carries a bloated 1.97 WHIP into this contest, and facing a Braves lineup that features a red-hot rookie in Drake Baldwin—who already has five home runs and 13 RBIs in just 11 games—is a recipe for an early exit. Veteran bats like Matt Olson and Jurickson Profar also have a long history of success against Kikuchi, both maintaining career OPS marks north of .900 against him.
The Angels are riding high on a three-game winning streak, but they are playing with fire. Their defense has been leaky, committing nine errors already this season, which provides a very thin margin for error behind a pitcher like Kikuchi who allows so much traffic. While Mike Trout has historically owned Lopez, his status is clouded by a hand contusion. Even if he suits up, facing 98-mph heaters with a bruised hand is a tall order. With the Braves’ elite backend of the bullpen featuring Raisel Iglesias and Robert Suarez fully rested and ready to lock the door, I’m betting on Lopez’s elite form and Atlanta’s superior offensive discipline to even this series and halt their slide.
